Miles vistan el International Festival
El Mobile International Festival del 2010 se llevó acabo en el Mobile Civic Center, el 18,19 y 20 de Noviembre. Más de 70 países fueron representados durante el festival  por medio de 207 exhibiciones, artesanías y comida.  Participantes del festival anual son miembros registrados de la organización en la ciudad quienes planifican el gran evento durante todo el año.
     Uno de los países miembros, El Salvador es representado por la familia Barahona de San Sebastian, San Vicente.
     Gloria Barahona Schneider es la vicepresidente del Mobile International Festival.
     “Yo llegué a Mobile en el 1963 para estudiar en el Springhill College, Providence School of Nursing”, dice Schneider. “Me gradué de la segundaria Americana Murphy High School en El Salvador, ahí conocí a una maestra en que me habló sobre Mobile.”
     Barahona dice que le habían otorgado una beca universitaria en el estado de Minnesota pero no quería ir a cuenta del clima frio. Ella cuenta que fue así como la Sra. Jelks, quien luego patrocinó sus estudios al extranjero, le platicó sobre el clima caliente del Golfo y su decisión fue tomada.
     El International Festival es la creación de la Srta. Annelle Jerome, una mujer que ha viajado a través del mundo y a quien le gusta tener invitados internacionales en su hogar para compartir cenas. Las cenas se convirtieron en festivas fiestas y las fiestas en un festival. Mobile ha sido anfitrión a los 27 años que tiene el evento.
    “Toma mucho esfuerzo de parte de todos los países. Muchas familias ayudan al representar su país y también participan algunas organizaciones,” dice Barahona.
     La exhibición de El Salvador es coordinada por Barahona, su madre de 93 años, Rosa Barahona, su hermana Flor de María Barahona Flores y su sobrina Glenda Barahona Flores.
     “Mi mamá hace toda las flores de papel” dice ella. “Todo el material viene desde El Salvador. El dinero que recaudamos es para nuestra iglesia.”

International Festival Greets Thousands

The 2010 Mobile International Festival was held at the Mobile Civic Center on November 18, 19 and 20. The festival featured more than 70 countries represented by 207 display, souvenir and food booths.  Participants of the annual festival are registered members of the city sponsored organization that plans the big event year-round.
     One of the charter member countries is El Salvador represented by the Barahona family from San Sebastian, San Vicente.
     Gloria Barahona Schneider is the vice president of the Mobile International Festival.
     “I came to Mobile in 1963 to attend Springhill College, Providence School of Nursing,” Schneider said. “I graduated from an American high school in El Salvador. I met a teacher from Murphy High School who told me about Mobile.”
    Barahona said that she had a scholarship to attend a college in Minnesota but didn’t want to go there because of the cold weather. She said that’s when Ms Jelks, who later became her exchange student sponsor, told her about the warm Gulf Coast weather her decision was made.
     The International Festival was the brainchild of Ms. Annelle Jerome, a woman who had traveled the world and began inviting international guests to her home for dinners. Dinners turned into holiday parties, parties turned into a festival. This year, Mobile hosted the 27th annual event.
     “It took a lot of effort from a lot of different countries. A lot of families help to represent their countries and some are organizations,” Borahona said.
     The El Salvador display is coordinated by Borahona, her 93-year-old mother, Rosa Barahona, sister Flor de Maria Barahona Flores, and niece Glenda Barahona Flores.
     “My mom makes all of the paper flowers,” she said. “All of the materials come from El Salvador. The money we raise goes to our church.”
