Por qué llaman al fútbol “soccer”?

Soccer/Football es el deporte más popular en el mundo.  Aunque se asume ampliamente que la palabra fútbol (o “foot ball”) originalmente se refería a la acción del pie al patear un balón, existe una explicación histórica, la cual es que (el término) fútbol se refería a la variedad de juegos jugados en la Europa medieval que se jugaban a pie.  Dichos juegos eran usualmente jugados por campesinos, en contraste con los juegos a caballo (como el polo) frecuentemente jugados por los aristócratas.  No existe evidencia concluyente de ninguna de estas explicaciones, la palabra fútbol siempre ha implicado una variedad de juegos jugados a pie, y no solo para aquellos juegos que incluyan el patear el balón.  En algunos casos, la palabra fútbol inclusive se ha aplicado a juegos que han prohibido específicamente el patear el balón.

Las reglas del fútbol fueron codificadas en Inglaterra por la Football Association (Asociación de Fútbol) en 1863, y el nombre “association football” (fútbol asociado) fue el definido para distinguir el juego de las otras formas de fútbol jugadas en aquellos tiempos, específicamente el fútbol rugby.  El término “soccer” que se originó en Inglaterra, primero apareciendo en la década de 1880 como una manera corta y pueblerina para decir “association” (asociado) y frecuentemente aludida al antiguo capitán de fútbol inglés Charles Wreford-Brown.

Hoy día, este deporte es generalmente conocido simplemente como “football” en los países de habla Inglesa donde éste es el más popular código de fútbol.  En países donde otros códigos de football son más populares, el deporte recibe el nombre de “soccer”.  De las 45  organizaciones nacionales asociadas a la FIFA donde el Inglés es lengua oficial o primaria, 42 usan “football” en el nombre oficial de sus organizaciones (solo Canadá, Samoa y Estados Unidos usan “soccer”).  En 2005, la asociación de fútbol de Australia cambió su nombre de “soccer” a “football” para alinearse con el uso internacional general del término.  En 2007, Nueva Zelanda hizo lo mismo citando que “el juego internacional se llama football”.  FIFA, la organización mundial que gobierna dicho deporte lo define en sus estatutos como “fútbol asociado” pero el término más común usado por la FIFA y el Comité Olímpico Internacional es football.

Soccer/Football is the most popular sport in the world.  While it is widely assumed that the word "football" (or "foot ball") references the action of the foot kicking a ball, there is a historical explanation, which is that football originally referred to a variety of games in medieval Europe, which were played on foot. These games were usually played by peasants, as opposed to the horse-riding sports (such as polo) often played by aristocrats. There is no conclusive evidence for either explanation, and the word football has always implied a variety of games played on foot, not just those that involved kicking a ball. In some cases, the word football has even been applied to games which have specifically outlawed kicking the ball.

The rules of football were codified in England by the Football Association in 1863, and the name association football was coined to distinguish the game from the other forms of football played at the time, specifically rugby football. The term soccer originated in England, first appearing in the 1880s as a slang abbreviation of the word "association," often credited to former England captain Charles Wreford-Brown.

Today the sport is generally known simply as football in English-speaking countries in which it is the most popular football code. In countries where other codes are more popular, the sport is more commonly referred to as soccer. Of the 45 national FIFA affiliates in which English is an official or primary language, 42 use football in their organizations official name (only Canada, Samoa and the United States use soccer). In 2005, Australia's association football governing body changed its name from soccer to football to align with the general international usage of the term. In 2007, New Zealand followed suit citing "the international game is called football". FIFA, the sport's world governing body, defines the sport as association football in its statutes, but the term most commonly used by FIFA and the International Olympic Committee is football.
