El Club de Estudiantes Latinos en Alabama Recauda Fondos para Orfelinato en Guatemala
Cuando la profesora Alissa Murphy oyó acerca del patio de recreo del Orfelinato del Hermano Pedro, ella le pidió al organizador, Bill Specht que hiciera una presentación a sus estudiantes en Foley High School. El orfelinato en Antigua, Guatemala es el hogar de 60 niños discapacitados desde infantes hasta 18 años y todos están en sillas de ruedas.

“Cuando Specht nos mostró las fotos del orfelinato ellos querian hacer algo,” dijo Murphy. “Cuando Ud. ve las caras de los niños, Ud. ve porque escogimos esto como nuestro proyecto del año para recaudar fondos. Además de padecer de enfermedades discapacitantes y ser huérfanos también, estos niños tienen las más sorprendente sonrisas y brillo en sus ojos!”

Murphy dice que ella cree que el Club de Estudiantes Latinos debe de ser más que para vida social, debe de ser para servir.

“Espero enseñar a los estudiantes que cualquiera puede ayudar a los menos afortunados, aún estudiantes de high school,” ella dijo. “Yo quiero que mis estudiantes, y ciertamente mis propios hijos, vean a su alrededor, sin importar cual sea la situación del presente en la vida, ya sea-rica, pobre o término medio-y decir, “A quien puedo ayudar?”

Los estudiantes empezaron por donar sus $100 que habian ganado por su carroza en el desfile de Navidad, pero querian más. Esa donación ayudó a comprar un columpio para silla de ruedas. Este año, los niños recaudaron $1,268.09 para el orfelinato el cual servirá para comprar otro columpio especializado y/o un televisor para los niños. Los estudiantes presentaron un cheque al Sr. Specht en el Festival del Dia de La Raza, en Foley, el 17 de Octubre. Su profesora y la comunidad están orgullosos de ellos por su altruismo.

Más fondos y voluntarios se necesitan para continuar proveyendo cuidado y apoyo para los niños húerfanos en Antigua. El columpio para silla de ruedas ayuda a llenar lo que ha sido un patio vacio, mientras voluntarios visitan el orfelinato a hablar y cargar a los niños que pasan 16-18 horas cada dia en sus cunas.

Latino Student Club in Alabama Raise Funds for Orphanage in Guatemala
When teacher Alissa Murphy heard about the Hermano Pedro Orphanage Playground, she asked organizer, Bill Specht to make a presentation to her students at Foley High School. The orphanage in Antigua, Guatemala is home to 60 disabled children ranging in age from infants to 18 and all are in wheelchairs.

“When [Specht] showed us pictures of the orphanage, they wanted to do something,” Murphy said. “When you see the kids’ faces, you see why we chose this as our special fundraiser for the year. Despite being afflicted with disabling diseases and being orphans, too, those kids have the most amazing smiles and sparkles in their eyes!”

Murphy says she feels that the student Club de Latinos should be about more than socializing, but about service.

“I hope to teach the students that anyone can help those less fortunate, even high school kids,” she said. “I want my students, and indeed my own kids, to look around themselves, no matter what their current station in life is--rich, poor, or in between--and say, ‘Who can I help?’”

The students began with by donating their $100 prize money they won for their Christmas parade float entry, but wanted to do more. That donation helped to buy a wheelchair swing.

This year, the kids raised $1,268.09 for the orphanage which will go toward another specialized swing and/or a television for the children. The students presented a check to Mr. Specht at the Dia De La Raza Festival in Foley on October 17. Their teacher and community are proud of them for their altruism.

More fundraising and volunteers are needed to continue providing care and support for the orphaned children in Antigua. The wheelchair swing helps to build what has been an empty courtyard while volunteers visit the orphanage to talk to and hold the children who spend 16-18 hours each day in their cribs.
