Reflecciones  de la quinceañera

El Sábado pasado, el Centro de Recursos Latino de La Costa Latina llevo acabo la primera celebración de la rifa de Quiceañera. La ganadora, Candelaria Acosta es una alumna de la Washington High Shool donde practica atletismo. Con la esperanza de continuar su educación, Candy tiene buenas  esperanzas  para su futuro. El primer paso  para realizar sus sueños puede haber sido la celebración de su quinceañera.
     Mi internado con el Centro de Recursos Hispano de La Costa Latina me ha ofrecido la invaluable oportunidad de hablar con mujeres y jóvenes que frecuentan el centro para asistir las actividades programadas. Las respuestas a muchas preguntas que les hice acerca de sus experiencias con la quinceañera y su sentido me han brindado algunas respuestas acerca de su significado. Lo que he aprendido es que los quince no es un evento de "el momento" mas bien sus efectos duran toda una vida. La familia se reúne abecés viajando largas distancias para apoyar la transición de niña a joven en camino a ser mujer. La comunidad hispana se unen para reconocer esta transición y gente  se ofrece para ayudar y donar lo necesario para este evento. La quinceañera establece un laso entre la familia y la comunidad, siendo las dos cosas importantes para la niña de los quince.  
     Sea lo que sea que la vida tiene preparado para Candy, ella siempre tendrá memoria de su quinceañera para recordarle que tiene una familia que la ama y una comunidad que la apoya- son recuerdos que le ayudaran a triunfar.

Reflections on the quinceañera

     This past Saturday, La Costa Latina/Hispanic Resource Center held their first Quinceañera Giveaway celebration.  The winner, Candelaria Acosta is a student at Washington High School where she also runs track.  Hoping to continue her education, Candy has high hopes for her future.  A first step in the realization of her dreams may have been the celebration of her quinceañera.
     My internship with La Costa Latina/Hispanic Resource Center has afforded me the invaluable opportunity of speaking with the women and girls who frequent the center and attend the scheduled events.  Their answers to the many questions I posed about their experiences with the quinceañera and its meaning have provided me with some answers to its significance.  What I have learned is that the quince is not so much an in the “moment” event but its effects last a lifetime.  Family gather sometimes traveling long distances to support the transition from young girl to a young lady on her way to womanhood.  The Hispanic community come together to recognize this transition as people volunteer to provide the workforce and donations necessary for this event.  The quinceañera establishes a connection between family and community, both of which will be important in the life of the quince girl. 
     Whatever life has in store for Candy, she will always have the memories of her quinceañera to remind her that she has a family that loves her and a community that supports her - it will be these memories which will enable her to succeed.
