Reconociendo y Combatiendo El Tráfico Humano
     Inmigrantes, particularmente aquellos que no tienen autorización legal, son vulnerables a muchos abusos a manos de personas sin escrúpulos. De todos los problemas que enfrentan los inmigrantes, el tráfico humano es uno de los más peligrosos. Victimas de tráfico humano sufren abusos, explotación, y degradación. Frecuentemente, las condiciones en la cual estas victimas viven son una versión de esclavitud moderna. Reciente estimaciones indican que casi 20,000 personas son traficadas a los Estados Unidos cada año, con un sustancial número de ellos traficados a la Florida.
     “Trafico humano” es generalmente definido como el uso de fuerza, fraude o coerción para obtener que una víctima involuntariamente sirva de esclavo o sirviente, participar en actividad sexuales o ser detenido o cautiverio por deuda. El tráfico humano puede tomar distintas formas. A algunas victimas les prometen empleo, solo para encontrarse debiendo dinero a sus empleadores y nunca poder saldar la deuda. Otros son obligados a la prostitución, servicio doméstico o a trabajar sin paga. Miedo a los traficantes o a la policía, detiene a las victimas de escaparse. Muchos puede que tengan miedo al traficante, temor de ser arrestados o no tener donde ir.
     Afortunadamente, hay organizaciones luchando contra el tráfico humano. Un ejemplo es la Coalición de Florida Contra Trafico Humano (FCAHT), la cual ayuda a victimas de tráfico humano a escapar de su situación. El FCAHT puede ayudar a las victimas de trafico humano encontrar un lugar seguro para vivir, obtener tratamiento medico y poner fin a su abuso. El FCAHT puede asistir a las victimas a que trabajen con la policía en un ambiente seguro para así traer a los traficantes a la justicia. Quizás lo más importante es que el FCAHT ayuda a las victimas a recobrar su dignidad como seres humanos.

Recognizing and Combating Human Trafficking
     Immigrants, particularly those who do not have legal authorization, are vulnerable to many different abuses at the hands of unscrupulous people. Of all the issues facing immigrants, human trafficking is one of the most dangerous. Victims of human trafficking suffer abuse, exploitation, and degradation.   Often, the conditions under which these victims live are a modern-day version of slavery. Recent estimates indicate that nearly 20,000 persons are trafficked into the United States every year, with a substantial number trafficked into Florida .
     “Human trafficking” is generally defined as the use of force, fraud or coercion to obtain a victim to engage in involuntary servitude or slavery, to participate in sexual activity, or to be held in peonage or debt bondage. Human trafficking can take many different forms. Some victims are promised employment, only to find themselves owing money to their employers and never able to work off their debt. Others are forced to become prostitutes, domestic servants, or laborers without pay. Fear of their traffickers, or of law enforcement, keeps many of these victims from escaping. Others may be afraid that if they leave their traffickers, they will be arrested or have nowhere to go.
     Fortunately, there are organizations fighting against human trafficking. One example is the Florida Coalition Against Human Trafficking (FCAHT), which exists to help trafficking victims escape their situations. FCAHT can help trafficking victims find a safe place to live, obtain medical care, and end their abuse. FCAHT will assist victims in working with law enforcement in a safe, non-threatening environment to see their traffickers brought to justice. Perhaps most importantly, FCAHT helps victims recover their dignity as human beings.
