The Cuban-American Association of Pensacola Announces the 2010-2011 CAAP Prize for High School and College Students
The Cuban-American Association of Pensacola is happy to announce the third annual competition for the $500 CAAP Prize for High School and College Students. The award to go to the creator(s) of the best work in any genre depicting some aspect of the Cuban-American odyssey.
Purpose: The CAAP Prize is intended to promote one of the purposes of the organization, to wit: the “preserving and transmitting [of] knowledge of the Cuban-American odyssey.”
Qualifying Criteria: The contest is open to all high school juniors and seniors, and college freshmen and sophomores enrolled in the 2010-2011 academic year. Prospective entrants need to familiarize themselves with the collective experience of hundreds of thousands of Cubans who have left the Island since 1959 in search of political freedom and economic opportunity.
     Qualifying entries may be in any genre, including but not limited to essays, stories, visual art (collages of photos, posters, paintings, sculptures), videos, etc. The deadline for submission is Monday, May 2nd, at 4:00 p.m. All entries are to be delivered to Professor Zeida Ward, at the following address:

All entries need to be accompanied by an affirmation on the part of the student that the work submitted is his or her creation.
Selection process: Officers of the CAAP Board constitute the organizing committee for the CAAP Prize. By majority vote, the organizing committee will decide whether a submission meets the stipulated qualifications and determine which entries advance to the finalist stage. In selecting the winner, the Board may consult specialists in the genres submitted.
Terms of the Award: The award will be made in the form of a check made out to the winner or to a charity of his or her choice. The prizes will be announced at the summer meeting of the Association, and the winner and parents invited to attend free of charge. The winning entry will be displayed at the event and becomes the property of CAAP. Upon request, all others will be made available to the authors for retrieval for a month after the announcement of the winner.
Evaluation Criteria: All qualifying entries will be evaluated according to historical accuracy, artistic or literary merit, and keenness of perception and understanding of the Cuban-American odyssey.
Exclusions: No member of the family (children or grandchildren, nephews, nieces, or grand nephews or grand nieces) of the CAAP Board of Directors is eligible to receive the CAAP Prize.
