El Asesinato de Diego Alvarez
y de su Amigable Fantasma

     Diego Alvarez fue asesinado en su casa cerca de su Ferry en Chickasaw Bogue Creek el 2 de Abril de 1820. Fue sorprendido por un ataque sorpresa mientras se encontraba solo. El tenia como 70 años. Su asesino fue Victoriano de Sayas. Fue capturado con varios artículos que le pertenecían a Alvarez y el confeso el crimen, fue demandado y sentenciado a ser colgado. El se cito con el Padre Vincent Gener y pidió que la siguiente confesión fuese publicada, y apareció en el periódico de la siguiente manera:
     “Yo, Victoriano de Sayas, y mulato libre, Nativo de Cuba, ahora encarcelado en Mobile, en el Estado de Alabama, condenado a ser colgado por haberle quitado injustamente
la vida a Diego Alvarez, hago la siguiente declaración:
     1ro) Habiendo matado a un hombre Negro llamado Gamara, cerca de la Iglesia llamada Mercy, hace como 8 0 9 años alrededor de las 5pm.
     2ndo)Un Cataloniano, en frente de el Oratorio de la Iglesia de St. Phillip, en compañía de varios amigos, como hace 7 años, entre las horas de las 6 a 7pm, y me entere de
este asesinato y que Zeferino Garcia fue condenado a servir en la Milicia.
     Estos asesinatos fueron cometidos en la Habana, Cuba y por ultimo el de Diego Alvarez, en su hacienda el Domingo de Pascua, como a las 3:30pm, por haberme corrido de su
casa, y por lo cual he sido justamente condenado. Le hago la petición a el Cura de Mobile, el Padre Vincent Gener haga
esta nota publica.”

     El extraño caso de Diego Alvarez no termina aquí. Se ha dicho que ronda por el centro de Mobile y en lasáreas que antes eran parte de sus terrenos. Se dice que en sus apariciones de presenta con vestimenta típica
de la época colonial, listo para la guerra con la espada colgando de su cinturón, y donde también cargaba sus dos pistolas. Se ha dicho que carga una gran monedero en su cinturón y que utiliza su sombreo que lo distinguía a el. Se alega que antes de aparecerse lo se
escucha que viene. El sonido ha sido descrito como si fuera un hombre caminando con botas pesadas, con espuelas y monedas golpeándose en el monedero.
     Su fantasma siempre se aparece en noches llenas de neblina. Hay gente que afirman que el les ha ayudado, y pensaban que era alguna persona perdida de el festival de Mardi Gras o alguien que venia de alguna fiesta de disfraces. Hay muchos indigentes, hombres y mujeres o aquellos con necesidad de ayuda en el centro de Mobile y a orillas de carreteras en dirección a Saraland, Chickasaw, Prichard and Chickasaw Bogue Creek, que dicen que alguien vestido raro con armas de aspecto antiguo y un sombreo se les ha aparecido de la nada y los ha ayudado so lo para desaparecer en sus propios ojos.
     El es considerado como un santo por sus actos de buena fe. Se escuchan historias que cuentas que el pasa deambulando en busca de su asesino y ayudando a esas personas con mala suerte o por otras razones y que no
tienen quien les ayude.

The Murder of Diego Alvarez and his Friendly Ghost

     Diego Alvarez was murdered at his home near his Ferry at Chickasaw Bogue Creek on April 2, 1820. He was caught by a surprise attack while he was alone. He was in his 70s. His killer was Victoriano de Sayas. He was caught with many items belonging to Alvarez and confessed to the crime, was tried, and sentenced to death by hanging. He met with Father Vincent Gener and asked that the following confession be published, which appeared, in the newspaper as follows:
     “I, Victoriano de Sayas, a free mulatto, Native of Cuba, now in the jail of Mobile, State of Alabama, condemned to be hanged for having unjustly taken away the life of Diego Alvarez, do make the following declaration:
     1st) Having murdered a Negro man by the name of Gamara, near the Church called Mercy, about 8 or 9 years ago, about 5pm.
     2nd) A Catalonian, in front of the Oratory of St. Phillip’s Church, in company of some of my friends, about 7 years ago, between the hours of 6 to 7 pm, of which murder I heard that Zeferino Garcia was condemned to serve in the Army.
     The murders were committed at Havana, Cuba and lastly that of Diego Alvarez, at his Plantation, on Easter Sunday, about half past 3pm, for having excluded me from his house, and for which I have been justly condemned. I request the Priest of Mobile, Father Vincent Gener, to make this public.”
     The strange case of Diego Alvarez doesn’t end here. He is said to haunt downtown Mobile and the area of his former landholdings. This ghostly apparition is said to appear dressed in typical colonial period clothing, outfitted for war, with a sword hanging from his belt, where he also has two flint lock pistols tucked in. He is said to have a large coin bag, also tied to his belt and he is wearing his distinctive plumed hat. His apparition allegedly is heard prior to it being seen. The sound of it has been described, as a man walking with heavy boots, with spurs on, and coins jingling, in a bag.
     His ghost is always seen on misty, fog filled nights. There are some who claim that he has helped them, and they thought it was a lost Mardi Gras ball reveler or someone coming, from a costume party. There are many homeless men and women and or those in need or in distress in downtown Mobile and by the side of the roads to Saraland, Chickasaw, Prichard and Chickasaw Bogue Creek, who claim that a strangely dressed man, with ancient looking weapons and a strange looking plumed hat, has appeared out of the mists and assisted them only to disappear literally before their eyes.
     He is considered to be a saint-like figure for his good deeds. There are stories that he walks around looking for his killer and helping those who by misfortune or for other reasons, have no one to help them.
