ATU marcharon a las oficinas del Comisionado del Condado de Escambia |
ATU marches to Escambia County Commissioners’ office By Joslyn Rosado Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local #1395 members and supporters along with individuals that are a part of the Occupy Pensacola movement rallied and then marched to the Escambia County commissioners’ building on Nov. 3. They rallied in hope of getting a better transit system, as the Escambia County Area Transit bus system is currently being managed by Veolia Transportation, a company based in France. Mike Lowery, the president of the ATU carried a petition with more than 5,000 signatures of citizens of Pensacola who are upset to find out that $250,000 of their tax dollars were going to a management company in another country. About 75 people marched down Palafox while chanting, “The people united will never be defeated” and, “Out of the park, into the streets.” Commissioners quieted the rally supporters as they cheered Lowery during the public forum. Applause was then demonstrated by waving their hands above their heads. Escambia County Commissioner Gene Valentino (District 2) invited Lowery an opportunity to continue discussions with Lowery about resolving management issues. Other commissioners did not. The county board extended the contract with Veolia for an additional 90 to give them until the end of the year to decide on whether they will renew the management contract. |
