Más de 12,000 Caminan por el Cáncer del Seno |
More than 12,000 walk for breast cancer Joslyn Rosado More than 12,000 men and women walked in support of breast cancer awareness on a very chilly Oct. 29 morning. The chilly weather didn’t stop the crowd from cheering and chanting during the three mile trek from Cordova Mall down Airport Blvd. to 12th Avenue and turning back at Summit Blvd. The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk had a change in the route this year. Instead of walking from University Mall to Cordova Mall, the walk started and ended at Cordova Mall due to construction at University Mall. More than 350 teams walked this year and helped raise more than $415,000 as of Oct. 31. They are still collecting money until Nov. 4. Last year, Pensacola was the third highest in Florida for amount of money raised. “We surpass our goal every year,” event chair, Christy Shane said. “It goes past our expectations. Our unofficial goal was $500,000.” Everyone had a different reason for walking this year, some walked for a friend while others walked just for the cause. “Our philanthropy is Susan G. Komen, so every year we participate in the walk,” Antoinette Schicchi, who walked for her fifth year with her sorority Zeta Psi Eta, said. “On a personal note, I am walking for a close friend who recently survived her battle with breast cancer.” Christen Wernet who walked with the University of West Florida’s Student Nurses Association walked for her first time this year and said she’d definitely walk again. “I couldn't believe how many people were there, it was great,” Wernet said. “Everybody was encouraging everyone and it was a lot of fun.” Shannon Hemmings wasn’t on a team, but she walked with a few of her friends to bring awareness to breast cancer. “I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself,” Hemmings said. “I love when a big group of people get together to achieve one very important goal, it’s inspiring.” La Costa Latina participated in “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walks in Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach on Saturday, October 29. |
