Desafortunadamente no se me hizo posible publicar la carta completa de la señora Armour, pero sus palabras me conmovieron y estoy agradecida de que nos mandara esta carta. –Grace
Gobernador Bentley, Juez Sharon Blackburn y todo a quien le concierna,
Soy maestra. Llevo enseñado más de lo que tienen de vida los padres de mis estudiantes!
Es con lagrimas en mi corazón, que reporto que al pasar el HB 56 la enseñanza y aprendizaje en my aula ha parado. Sucede que soy maestra de inglés como segundo idioma (ESL) para el condado de Baldwin en nuestro gran estado de Alabama. Ya no más están los pasillos de nuestra escuela, autobuses y aulas llenas de muchos de nuestros felices e inocente niños Americanos.
Mucho de nuestros niños “Latino” Americanos se han ido, otros viven con miedo y son aterrorizado mientras caminan a la estación de su autobús porque se les grita, “regresa a México!” Personas dicen que literalmente debemos “tirarlos por arriba de la cerca.” Se les esta tirando huevos tanto a ellos como a sus casas y autos según manejan hacia la escuela. Ahora se agachan cuando ven un carro de policía. Están viviendo con miedo.
El hecho es y el que muchas personas no parecen entender es de que estos niños son nacidos en los Estados Unidos de América. La mayoría de los niños que han sido aterrorizados nacieron en nuestro pequeño pueblo de Foley, Alabama. A pesar de cómo sus padres llegaron a nuestro país, estos niños son ahora ciudadanos Americanos. Estos niños ahora están atrapados en dos mundos, su ancestro y cultura Latina y el sueño Americano.
Estos estudiantes ESL conocen a primera mano la lucha la cual sus padres han tenido que atravesar para llegar a los Estados Unidos de América para que ellos puedan ser ciudadanos Americanos y recibir una buena educación. Estos son algunos de nuestros mejores estudiantes en la escuela Foley Elementary y de muchas de las escuelas a través de nuestro gran estado de Alabama. Estos niños son estudiantes con honores, estudiantes la cual pueden estar parados en el escenario a fin de año para recibir su medalla Presidencial, meritos de buen carácter moral y clasificar nacionalmente con alto porcentaje comparados a todos los niños en exanimaciones a nivel nacional. Estos son los estudiantes la cual les estamos pidiendo que se vayan del estado? Si es así pues regresemos a los Irlandés, los Alemanes, Italianos y todo inmigrante. Quien quedara para recitar la promesa de nuestro país, pagar los impuestos, luchar por nuestras libertades y quien se sentará en los escritorios de nuestras escuelas en América?
Estoy de acuerdo con el Gobernador Bentley, Juez Blackburn y todos los demás que dicen que “inmigración ilegal” es un serio problema que debe ser atendido, pero el HB 56 no es la respuesta. El HB 56 es una pesadilla y ha hecho más daño de los que se imaginan. No les puedo expresar en palabras el trauma de los niños, padres, maestros, el personal de nuestra escuela y el devastador efecto que esta ley ha causado en nuestra comunidad en esta ultima semana. Yo no puedo expresar en palabras el dolor y las lagrimas que sean derramado entre las paredes de mi aula según nuestras familias ESL retiran a sus hijos de la escuela esta semana. No les puedo expresar el dolor en el alma de los maestros y estudiantes según sus estudiantes con honores y compañeros ya no se sienten seguros de venir a la escuela. No les puedo contar cuantos reporteros y camarógrafos que ha estado en mi clase capturando la trágica historia del éxodo de familias llena de fe, personas buenas y trabajadoras que ha huido por cuenta del HB 56.
Si, inmigración ilegal es una situación seria la cual hay que atender, pero es el problema de nuestra nación. Leyes federales necesitan ser esforzadas y/o mejoradas e implementadas. Esto es asunto nacional que no puede ser resulto implementando regulaciones estatales injustas que castigan a niños Americanos inocentes y que además les quita su derecho a una educación.
Solo soy una maestra. Una maestra de ESL que da servicio a 53 estudiantes K-ESL, todos con excepción a 6 nacieron en Alabama. Nuestra escuela tienen 14 distintos países representados, esto no solo son Mexicanos las cual están echando del estado! Nuestra escuela ya perdió 31 estudiantes y por lo menos 40 familias más están haciendo preparaciones para irse al menos que un mandato sea puesto contra el HB 56. Como puede ser esto una solución para la economía que ya esta en decadencia en nuestro estado?...

Governor Bentley, Judge Sharon Blackburn, and To Whom It May Concern,
I am a teacher. I have now been teaching longer than most of my students’ parents have been alive!
It is with tears in my heart, I report that with the passing of HB 56 teaching and learning has stopped in my classroom. You see, I am an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher for Baldwin County, in the great state of Alabama. No longer are our school hallways, buses, and classrooms filled with many of our happy, innocent American children.
Many of our American “Latino” children are now gone, others are living in fear and being terrorized as they walk to their school buses because they are being yelled at “to go back to Mexico!” People literally are saying we need to “throw them back over the fence.” Eggs are being thrown at them, their homes, and their cars as they drive to school. They now “duck” when they see a police car. They are living in fear.
The fact is and what many people don’t seem to understand, is that these children born in the United States of America! Most of these children that are being harassed and terrorized were born right here in our small town of Foley, Alabama. Regardless of how their parents came to our country, these children are now American citizens. These children are now caught between two worlds, their Latino culture and ancestry and the American Dream. . .
These ESL students know first-hand what struggles their parents have gone through to come to the United States of America so that they could become American citizens and get a good education. These are some of our best students at Foley Elementary and many schools throughout our great state of Alabama. These are honor roll students, students that stand on the stage at the end of the year and receive Presidential Awards, Good Character awards, and nationally in the top percent of all American children in test scores. These are the students we are asking to leave our state? If so, then let’s send back the Irish, the Germans, the Italians, and all immigrants. Who would be left to recite the pledge, to pay taxes, to fight for our freedom, to sit in desks at schools in America?
I agree with Governor Bentley, Judge Blackburn, and all those that say “illegal immigration” is a serious issue that must be dealt with, but House Bill 56 is not the answer. HB 56 is a nightmare and has hurt more people than you may realize. I cannot express in words the children, the parents, the staff at our school, and the devastating effects this law has caused in our community this past week. I cannot express in words the hurt and tears that have been shed within my classroom walls as our ESL families withdrew their children from our school this week. I cannot express to you the heartache of teachers and students at our school as their Honor Roll classmates and friends no longer feel safe to come to school. I cannot tell you how many reporters and camera men/women that have stood in my classroom to capture the tragic story of the exodus of good, hard-working, faith-filled families that have been driven away by HB 56.
Yes, illegal immigration is a serious issue that needs to be addressed, but it is our nation’s problem. Federal laws need to be enforced and/or improved upon and implemented. This is our nation’s problem that cannot be solved by implementing unfair State regulations that punish innocent American children and stops these children from getting an education.
I am but one teacher. An ESL teacher that served 53 K-ESL students, all but 6 of these children were born in Alabama. Our school has 14 different countries represented; these are not just Mexicans we are sending out of our state! Our school has already lost 31 students and at least 40 more families are making plans to leave unless an injunction is placed on HB 56. How could this be a solution to our already failing state’s economy? . . .
