Recordando a Deciré

Hay muchas personas en Navarre que recordarán a Decire Febus, pero ninguna más que su madre, Carmen.
"He sido bendecida con un marido maravilloso", dijo Carmen, "y juntos tenemos tres hijos maravillosos".
Deciré murió en un accidente de tránsito en el condado de Gadsden el 14 de julio. Era la hija de Carmen y Vini Febus, y la sobreviven su hermana mayor: Lydia y su hermano menor: Vini. Deciré asistió a escuelas del condado de Santa Rosa y se graduó de la escuela secundaria Navarre High School en 2007.
Durante sus cuatro años en la NHS, Deciré fue una atleta consumada que jugaba al fútbol, carreras en pista, y fue coronada como Reina de la Fiesta Homecoming en el 2006.
Siempre con una sonrisa y una carcajada, Deciré era más que una buena atleta, estudiante, fotógrafa y artista de maquillaje. Ella era una hija, hermana, amiga, y una joven que acababa de empezar la siguiente fase en su vida.
Deciré se había inscrito recientemente en el Instituto Aveda en Tallahassee, donde estaba estudiando para convertirse en una terapeuta de masaje y estética. Ya era una talentosa artista amateur de maquillaje. Deciré había hecho todo el maquillaje para una boda familiar el 7 de julio de 2012, demostrando sus habilidades mucho más allá de los deportes.
"Ella trabajó en As You Like It (salón) en Fort Walton Beach", dijo Carmen, " donde realmente la inspiraton para que fuera (a clases). Ella acaba de comenzar las clases el jueves 12 de julio, por lo que asistió a la clase solo por tres días. "
Carmen y Vini acababan de dejar a Deciré el 9 de julio con su novio, Bobby Hunsucker III, de Milton, quien también murió en el accidente.
Carmen dijo que Deciré y Bobby habían sido amigos desde hace seis o siete años, y habían estado saliendo durante dos años.
"El 7 de julio fue su segundo aniversario", dijo. Bobby acompañó a la familia Febus a Tallahassee para ayudarle a Deciré a desempacar y acomodar su nuevo apartamento.
"Fueron de compras a tiendas de artículos usados a comprar mesas y cortinas y a pasar un buen rato", dijo Carmen, quien agregó que la pareja estaba ya hablando de matrimonio.
Hunsucker había dejado su coche en Milton, mientras que él estaba ayudando a desempacar a Deciré, algo que -- al principio -- le pareció extraño a Carmen. Sin embargo, después de reflexionar, se dió cuenta de que era muy probable que Deciré volvería a la zona de Navarra con Hunsucker, de modo que la pareja podría sorprender a su hermano Vini y verla actuar en la noche del miércoles en la exhibición de "The Wiz", en el colegio Northwest Florida State College.
Deciré era una joven feliz, extrovertida, y poseía un poco de espíritu temarario. Era la primera en ofrecerse para ir a navegar en paracaídas o tomar parte de una nueva aventura. Su capacidad atlética de salto con garrocha inspiró a su hermano menor para entrar en ese deporte.
"Si ella puede hacerlo, yo puedo hacerlo", dijo Carmen, recordando la conversación.
En abril de 2006, en la prueba de atletismo contra Escambia, Deciré fue la última corredora en el relevo 4 x 4. Un testigo le dijo a Carmen que la única manera que el equipo navarro podría batir al de Escambia era si el equipo rival dejara caer el bastón.
"Nosotros vamos a ganar corriendo", dijo Carmen, "no porque nadie deje caer el bastón."
Mientras el equipo de los Raiders estaban retrasados por más de 75 metros ante el equipo de relevos de Escambia, Decire tomó la batuta y comenzó a acortar la brecha.
Carmen dijo que los compañeros de equipo de Deciré se alinearon en la pista para animarla en tanto que ella, lentamente, superó a cada corredor y terminó la carrera en primer lugar.
Más allá de la atleta y artista de maquillaje, la aventurera y amiga, Deciré fue la niñita de Carmen y Vini.
"La llamaba enana", dijo Carmen. "Ella era definitivamente la niña de papá, ella le contaba a su papi todo, por más pequeña que fuera la cosa."
Cuando Vini llegaba a casa, Carmen contaba que Deciré iba a la puerta y comenzaba a contarle a su padre todos los detalles de su día, incluso los más mínimos elementos.
"No podía guardar un secreto ante nadie, sobre todo ante su papi", dijo.
Una vez, cuando Carmen estaba planeando una fiesta sorpresa para Vini, le dijo a Deciré -- que en aquel entonces tenía 3 añitos de edad -- que por favor no divulgara los detalles a su padre. Cuando Vini llegó a su casa, Deciré corrió hacia la puerta y exclamó: "Papi, tus amigos no están viniendo ni vamos a tener una fiesta!"
"Ella se volvió y me dijo: 'Mira, yo no le dije", dijo Carmen con risa.
Recientemente, Carmen y su familia están sacando fuerza de la familia y amigos que se han reunido alrededor de ellos y de su fé.
"Jesús nos da nuestra fuerza", dijo Carmen, "y nuestra familia extendida de Navarra. Sin ellos ... no sé. "
Carmen descansa un poco más fácil a sabiendas de que ella expresó su amor por Deciré, y de hecho para toda su familia, todos los días.
"Yo siempre les digo que no traten bien a la gente porque se estén muriendo, trátenlos bien porque están viviendo", dijo Carmen. "Mis hijos saben cuánto los amo. Se los digo todos los días. Esa es mi paz. Deciré sabe cuánto la amo."
El funeral de Deciré se celebró el 20 de julio en la Iglesia Católica San Silvestre del Centro Parroquial. Un fondo memorial en el nombre de Deciré Febus y Hunsucker Robert se abrió en Eglin Federal Credit Union
El padre de Deciré, Larry "Vini" Febus, es miembro del consejo de Boricuas Ausentes en Ft.. Walton Beach. La Costa Latina envía nuestras más profundas condolencias a Carmen, Vini y su hermano, su familia y amigos.

Remembering Decire

 There are many people in Navarre who will remember Decire Febus, but none more than her mother, Carmen.
“I’ve been blessed with a wonderful husband,” said Carmen, “and together we have three wonderful children.”
Decire was killed in a car accident in Gadsden County on July 14. She was Carmen and Vini Febus’ middle child and is survived by her older sister Lydia and younger brother Vini. Decire attended Santa Rosa County Schools and graduated from Navarre High School in 2007.
During her four years at NHS, Decire was an accomplished athlete who played soccer and track and was crowned Homecoming Queen in 2006.
Always ready with a smile and a laugh, Decire was more than a talented athlete, student, photographer and makeup artist. She was a daughter, sister, friend, and a young woman who was just beginning the next phase in her life.
Decire had recently enrolled at the Aveda Institute in Tallahassee where she was studying to become a massage therapist and aesthetician. Already a gifted amateur makeup artist, Decire had done all the makeup for a family wedding on July 7, 2012, proving her abilities lay far beyond those on the sports field.
“She worked at As You Like It (salon) in Fort Walton Beach,” said Carmen, “and they really inspired her to go. She just started class on Thursday, July 12 so she was only in class for three days.”
Carmen and Vini had just dropped Decire off on July 9 with her boyfriend, Bobby Hunsucker III of Milton who was also killed in the crash.
Carmen said that Decire and Bobby had been friends for six or seven years, and had been dating for two years.
“July 7 was their two-year anniversary,” she said. Bobby accompanied the Febus family to Tallahassee to help Decire unpack and set up her new apartment.
“They went thrift store shopping to get tables and curtains, just having a good time,” Carmen said, adding that the couple was discussing marriage.
Hunsucker had left his car in Milton while he was helping Decire unpack, something that struck Carmen as odd at first. However, upon reflection, she realized that Decire was most likely coming back to the Navarre area with Hunsucker so that the pair could surprise her brother Vini and see him perform in the Wednesday night showing of “The Wiz” at Northwest Florida State College.
Decire was a happy, outgoing young woman, with a bit of a daredevil streak. She was the first to volunteer to go parasailing or take part in a new adventure. Her athletic prowess in pole vaulting inspired her younger brother to take on the sport.
“If she can do it, I can do it,” Carmen said, recalling the conversation.
During the April 2006 track meet against Escambia, Decire was the last runner in the 4 x 4 relay. A bystander said to Carmen that the only way the Navarre team could beat Escambia was if the opposing team dropped the baton.
“We’re going to win running,” Carmen said, “not by someone dropping the baton.”
With the Raiders trailing the Escambia relay team by more than 75 meters, Decire got the baton and began to close the gap.
Carmen said that Decire’s teammates lined the track to cheer her on as she slowly overtook the other runner and finished the race in first place.
Beyond the athlete and makeup artist, the adventurer and friend, Decire was Carmen and Vini’s little girl.
“I called her munchkin,” Carmen said. “She was definitely daddy’s little girl, she would tell daddy every little thing.”
When Vini came home, Carmen said that Decire would run to the door and tell her father every detail of her day, including the minutest elements.
“She couldn’t keep secrets from anyone, especially from daddy,” she said.
Once, when Carmen was planning a surprise party for Vini, she told a then 3-year-old Decire to please not divulge the details to her father. When Vini arrived home, Decire ran to the door and exclaimed, “Daddy, your friends are not coming over and we are not having a party!”
“She turned around and said to me, ‘See, I did not tell him,’” Carmen said with a laugh.
Ultimately, Carmen and her family are drawing strength from the family and friends who have gathered around them and from their faith.
“Jesus gives us our strength,” Carmen said, “And our extended Navarre family. Without them…I don’t know.”
Carmen rests a little easier knowing that she expressed her love for Decire, and indeed for her whole family, every day.
“I always tell them you don’t treat people good because they are dying, you treat them good because they are living,” Carmen said. “My children know how much I love them. I tell them every day. That’s my peace. Decire knows how much I love her.”
Decire Funeral was held on July 20 at St. Sylvester Catholic Church Parish Center Memorial fund in the name of Decire Febus and Robert Hunsucker opened at Eglin Federal Credit Union
