Baldwin County Commission Dedicates Historic Marker for Brodbeck-Zundle Brothers Store BAY MINETTE, AL—The Baldwin County Commission was joined by Brodbeck and Zundel family members and citizens of Point Clear and surrounding areas on December 12 as they dedicated a historic marker for the site which once held the Brodbeck-Zundel Brothers Store. The Brodbeck-Zundel Brothers General Merchandise Store was built after the Civil War in 1866. The site served the citizens of Point Clear as the local store and post office. The original building was long and narrow and sold a number of items including lumber, which was shipped to the store by the Brodbeck-Zundel Brothers own sailing vessel, the Lottie. Along with many other boats during this time, the Lottie off loaded its supplies at the wharf near the store known as Zundel’s Wharf. The Brodbeck-Zundel Brothers Store was visited frequently by visitors and locals accessing the water and wharf at the end of the road. A new store was built in 1905, and included an inventory of all the local citizens needs at the time, such as horse collars, needles, pins, ladies hats, shoes and crockery. The store which served the Point Clear area for over 79 years burned in 1945 and was never rebuilt. In October, 2010, the Brodbeck-Zundel Brothers family and heirs of the former store site deeded this property to Baldwin County. The Baldwin County Commission will place the historic marker at the store site on Zundels Road to commemorate the Brodbeck-Zundel Brothers Store which played such a large role in the formation of the Point Clear area. “This is a very happy and wonderful day for our family,” said Mr. Arnold Brodbeck. |
