The Moreno Family of Pensacola, Florida The Moreno family settled in Pensacola, Florida. The first of this family to arrive in America was Francisco Moreno (born 1732, Malaga, Spain, died 1778) who originally settled in Louisiana and is buried in New Iberia, Louisiana. His wife was Ana Lorenzo Mancebo (born Malaga, Spain, died June 9, 1801). Ana is buried at St. Louis Cemetery, in New Orleans. Their son, Dr. Fernando Moreno (born 1771, Malaga, Spain, died Havana, Cuba 1830, also found as 1838), settled in Pensacola and married Florentina Senac, with whom he had Francisco Moreno (born November 25th, 1792, died November 19, 1883). He married 3 times, first to Josefa Lopez (died 1820), then to her sister Margarita Eleutaria Lopez (born May 27, 1803, died June 10, 1851). They were the daughters of Nicolas Antonio Lopez (born 1746, Malaga, Spain) and Maria Victoria "Nancy" Calder (born 1762, Paisley, Scotland). His third marriage was to Mentoria Gonzalez (born August 12, 1834/35, died September 8, 1920). Moreno served as Spanish Consul in Pensacola, Florida from 1836 to the end of the Civil War. He had 27 children with his 3 wives and at the time of his death had 75 grandchildren and 127 great grandchildren. His sons served in the Confederate Military. Francisco Moreno’s cemetery plot and headstone at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Pensacola. His headstone says, “Here sleep, two of his wives, some of his children and an unknown Yankee Captain, no one would claim”. |
