Cultural Corner: Love in Any Language by Jenny Juhnke It is difficult to imagine Valentine’s Day is not a part of every culture, especially when we see the flowers, balloons and stuffed animals in every shop window from late January to mid-February. But, there are a variety of ways love is celebrated around the world. Here are a few: In Iran, Sepandarmaz is celebrated on February 17th, a day which commemorates love, friendship and the blessings of Earth. In Spain, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in a traditional way, except in Catalonia, where La Diada de Sant Jordi in April is an day to give books to loved ones. In Wales, St. Dwynwen’s Day in late January is a time to give love spoons to special people, and in Korea and Japan, Valentine’s Day in February is the time for women to present chocolate to the men they admire. Then, for the men, the bigger pressure comes a month later for White Day: On March 14th all the men who received these chocolates have to return the favor to those who gave them a gift on Valentine’s Day! No matter how you celebrate love, there’s a custom in every culture. |
