Read to Grow!, Growing Up Reading! By David Peñaflor; Mexican Folklorist Dear readers, summer is approaching and our children are on vacation. One of the activities we promote in them is recreational reading, reading for the fun of it. In my years as a Folklorist I have found an endless source of fantastic stories, taking us to different places and times involved in the rich imagination of our Indigenous and Hispanic peoples, since in each micro region "live" these fantastic stories of some hero with supernatural powers that usually fight for his people and rescues them from disasters and calamities, and what can be said about the legends where the local flora and fauna are matters of love, wisdom and emotions that always leave us a lesson or moral? PAEC Migrant Education Program summer course will have a bilingual book with hundreds of the most varied subjects of recreation for children -- including legends -- our goal is that every child read at least two stories a day and do recreational or hands-on activities in reference to the stories. We want to foster in them the habit of reading and the ability to do it aloud, as this technique is essential for their growth as students. For that reason we will also offer a workshop for parents on techniques to encourage their children the habit of reading. Parents, remember, reading is part of the annual FCAT. Read to Grow!, Growing up reading! No matter the age of children, the smaller the better; surely, you will find in your community library guidance on the books that are appropriate for each age, you can spend the time to share reading with them, encouraging and interacting wih them and have them explain, in their words, what they understood the book to say, looking together in the dictionary the meaning of new words and listening and responding to your questions. And most importantly, begin now to form a collection of leisure reading books and set aside a corner of your house so you can read together daily. To end this article I suggest some Internet addresses where you will find legends and fairy tales. http://www.colorincolorado.org/ http://www.mitos-mexicanos.com/leyendas-mexicanas/ http://ntic.educacion.es/w3//recursos2/cuentos/cuentos1/portada.html http://www.cuentos-infantiles.org/categoria/mitos-y-leyendas/ |
