Human Trafficking in Northwest Florida Crestview, FL—Human trafficking, sometimes described as modern-day slavery, occurs in all types of communities, large and small, urban and rural . . . and it has happened here. Florida is the third most popular state for human trafficking. In Northwest Florida, it occurs mostly in the tourism industry; in South Florida the crime plagues the agricultural industry. Inspector George S. Collins, Homeland Security, Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office will discuss “Human Trafficking in Northwest Florida” at the December 4th First Tuesday series program at the Crestview Public Library. The presentation will describe the crime of human trafficking and provide the audience with information on how they can spot victims and help prevent the crime. Collins has been investigating trafficking since 2003 as well as assisting other jurisdictions and states with counter-trafficking initiatives. He has been awarded the Freedom Award by the Florida Coalition Against Human Trafficking, has received Congressional recognition for his efforts, and has served on the state curriculum panel to develop a training course in trafficking investigations. The program begins at 10:30 a.m. with coffee and cookies served starting at 10 a.m. The library is located at 1445 Commerce Drive behind the Post Office in north Crestview. Call 682-4432. |
