Comunidad Latina de la Costa del Golfo en Beneficios de Becas Para Celebrar la Cultura
|
Latino Community in NWFL Benefits from Grants to Celebrate Culture Since 2005, La Costa Latina has worked hard to increase involvement and integrate the Latino community and culture within Northwest Florida and Southern Alabama. This year, efforts are being supported by the BP Gulf Seafood and Tourism Promotional Fund Grant and the Gulf Coast Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival (GGCAF) with funds awarded to La Costa Latina to produce a Cinco de Mayo Celebration in Downtown Pensacola, to beginning of a new professional folklorico dance group, and the ever growing Latino Festival. La Costa Latina and city agencies are developing plans to turn Downtown Pensacola into Old Mexico. Vendors and sponsors are being sought now to bring the flavors, sights and sounds of Mexico to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and the pride of community. Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for the Fifth of May) is a holiday observed regionally in Mexico, but mostly in the State of Puebla where it is called “El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla” (Spanish for “The Day of the Battle of Puebla”). Though some mistake the holiday for Mexico’s Independence Day which is celebrated on September 16, the date actually commemorates the defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 when the small, poorly equipped Mexican army of 4,500 defeated the French army of 8,000. The holiday is also observed in the U.S. as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. PB has made it possible to secure quality events with great Latino performances for the Latino Festival and Cinco de Mayo that are sure to attract visitors from Louisiana to Georgia. Mark your calendars, tell your friends, and stay connected with La Costa Latina to get details about these events. Go to www.LaCostaLatina.com and join us at facebook/latinomedia to get the latest information as it becomes available. Vendor and sponsor forms will be available soon. See page three for information for folklorico dancers. |
