"Nieto Encarcelado" Anciana Fue Objeto De Estafa En Crestview
     La Oficina del Sheriff del condado de Okaloosa quiere advertir a los residentes acerca de una estafa común que se utilizó esta semana a una anciana residente de Crestview.
     La víctima, de 78 años, recibió una llamada telefónica el miércoles de un hombre que se identificó como su nieto y aunque ella dice que no sonaba igual que su nieto, ella pensó que podría ser debido al estrés. Él continuó diciendo que él estaba en la cárcel en México y que necesitaba dinero para salir y regresar a los EE.UU. Dijo que había sido encarcelado debido a un accidente de automovilístico el que él era el conductor y puso un hombre en el teléfono dijo era su "abogado."
     El abogado dijo a la mujer que su nieto necesitaba $ 1,900 para salir de la cárcel y para enviar a través de Western Union. Se le dijo que no dijera nada a nadie, ya que podría poner en peligro el retorno seguro de su nieto al país.
     La mujer transfirió con éxito el dinero, pero más tarde habló con su nieto real que le informó de que no había estado en México o sido encarcelado.
     El "abogado," sin embargo también volvió a llamar y dijo que ahora se necesita más dinero para obtener la liberación de su nieto.
     Jueves, la víctima se contactó a la oficína del Sheriff del condado de Okaloosa que ahora está investigando.
     El escenario anterior es un uso común de "un familiar está en problemas" tipo de estafa, por lo general utilizada para estafar a los ciudadanos mayores.

 

 “Jailed Grandson” Scam Targets Elderly Crestview Woman
     The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office wants to warn residents about a common scam that was used this week to successfully con money out of an elderly Crestview resident.
     The 78-year old victim received a phone call Wednesday from a man who identified himself as her grandson and although she says he didn’t sound like her grandson, she thought it may be due to stress. He went on to say he was in jail in Mexico and needed money to get out and return to the U.S. He said he’d been jailed due to a car accident in which he was the driver and he put a man on the phone he said was his “lawyer.”
     The lawyer told the woman her grandson needed $1900.00 to get out of jail and to send it via Western Union. She was told not to say anything to anyone because it could jeopardize her grandson’s safe return to the country.
     The woman successfully transferred the money but later talked to her real grandson who informed her he had not been in Mexico or been jailed.
     The “lawyer” however also called back and said he now needed more money to get her grandson’s release.
     Thursday, the victim contacted the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office which is now investigating.
     The scenario above is a commonly used “a relative is in trouble” type of scam, typically used to target older citizens.
