Condado Le Abre El Paso Al Nuevo Año Con Celebración De Su Centenario
PANAMÁ CITY- Este año, el descender de la pelota de playa gigante significaba más que la bienvenida de un año nuevo, sino que representaba también la celebración del centenario del Condado de Bay.
      El condado, fundado en 1913, utilizó la quinta fiesta anual de Año Nuevo en la Noche del Descenso de la Gran Bola Playera (Beach Ball Drop) en el Muelle Park para iniciar su fiesta de centenario que se extenderá por todo un año.
     El Beach Ball Drop incluyó dos grandes pantallas de proyección donde aparecieron cerca de 400 imágenes que mostraron cómo ha lucido el condado en los últimos 100 años.
      Una vez en marcha, la celebración del centenario por todo este año tiene un enfoque más modesto, con la colocación de una tablero de boletines de doble cara de 4 por 8 pies en el interior del Centro de Gobierno del Condado de Bay. El tablero exhibirá un tema cada mes dando una vista del condado a través de fotos antiguas recogidas por voluntarios.
      Enero comenzó con los temas de la construcción, la arquitectura y la infraestructura. Febrero cuenta la historia de los afro-americanos.
      En primavera, las fechas importantes comienzan a mostrar su cara.  La legislatura estatal concedió la aprobación de la la creación del condado Bay el 24 de abril de 1913. Pero la fecha más importante, 1 de julio, fue el día cuando todo se hizo oficial. Después de recibir la aprobación del estado, los residentes se ocuparon de poner funcionarios constitucionales en sus puestos y de formar un gobierno. Y todo quedó armado ese verano.
      "El 1° de julio - ese fue el día reconocido [como la] fecha de nacimiento del condado de Bay y se celebra en el Parque McKenzie durante todo el día", dijo Terri Pierce, presidenta de la Comisión del Centenario.
      El comité quiere recrear esa fiesta y ha designado el sábado, 6 de julio, para otra celebración cívica. Por eso y las otras festividades durante el año, la comisión dió al comité $10.000.

 

 County Ushered in New Year with Centennial
Celebrations PANAMA CITY — This year when the giant beach ball descended, it meant more than a new year; it represented Bay County’s centennial celebration.
     The county, founded in 1913, used the fifth annual New Year’s Eve Beach Ball Drop at Pier Park to kick off its yearlong 100th birthday party.
     The Beach Ball Drop included two large projection screens, which displayed nearly 400 pictures showing the county over the last 100 years.
     Once under way, the yearlong centennial celebration takes a more modest approach, with the placement of a double-sided 4-by-8-foot bulletin board display inside the Bay County Government Center. The board features a theme each month seen through old pictures gathered by volunteers.
     January started with building, architecture and infrastructure. February features black history.
     In spring, the important dates start to roll in. The state legislature granted approval for Bay County’s creation April 24, 1913.
     But the most important date, July 1, was when it all became official. After receiving state approval, residents busied themselves getting constitutional officers in place and forming a government. And it all came together in the summer.
     “July 1 — that was recognized [as the] birthdate of Bay County and they celebrated in McKenzie Park that whole day,” said Terri Pierce, chairwoman of the Centennial Committee.
     The committee wants to re-create that party, designating Saturday, July 6, for another civic celebration. For that and the other festivities during the year, the commission gave the committee $10,000.
