Exhibición en Tanque Para Acariciar a las "Mantas de la Bahía" Comienza el 16 de Marzo
El Estuarium del Laboratorio Marino de la Isla Dauphin está a punto de abrir su primer tanque para acariciar animales al aire libre, una exhibición emocionante que invita a los visitantes a que conozcan acerca de las "Mantas de la Bahía." Este tanque de 6.400 galones albergará rayas nariz de vaca, rayas sureñas y tiburones cabeza de gorra, y los visitantes podrán acariciar tales animales una vez que la exposición se abra el sábado, 16 de marzo.
      "Estamos muy contentos de ofrecer esta exposición para que todos nuestros visitantes, ya sean locales o provenientes de todo el mundo, conozcan a estas criaturas que habitan en nuestras aguas locales", dijo el Dr. John Dindo, Director Asociado del Laboratorio Marino. "El Laboratorio Marino ha sido un defensor constante de la educación práctica, creemos que el aprendizaje a través de la experiencia conduce a la formación permanente y ¿qué podría ser más práctico que tener la habilidad de acariciar a una mantaraya o un tiburón?"
      El Laboratorio Marino, en su compromiso con el uso de energías alternativas, operará el tanque para acariciar animales a través de un sistema geotérmico de calefacción y refrigeración, manteniendo la temperatura de agua salada en unos cómodos 70 grados durante todo el año. Los bucles de bomba de calor están enterrados en un acuífero de agua dulce 170 pies debajo de la tierra donde la temperatura se mantiene constante en 70 grados. El circuito de agua dulce va a calentar o enfriar los circuitos de agua salada en función de la necesidad.
      "Esto no sólo es más rentable que pagar para calentar o enfriar continuamente el tanque", añade el Dr. Dindo, "esto está en línea con todos nuestros demás esfuerzos para apoyar y promover la energía alternativa. Ya tenemos la energía solar y un estacionamiento permeable, lo que es un paso siguiente natural, y queremos que nuestros visitantes vengan a aprender sobre este tema así como de las rayas y tiburones."
      Los visitantes tendrán la oportunidad de apreciar este escaparate único el sábado 16 de marzo. El Estuarium en el Dauphin Island Sea Lab está localizado en el 101 Bienville Boulevard en Dauphin Island, Alabama.

“Rays of the Bay” Touch Tank Exhibit Opens March 16
The Estuarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is about to open its first outdoor touch tank, an exciting exhibit that invites visitors to learn about the “Rays of the Bay.”  This 6,400-gallon tank will house cownose rays, southern stingrays and bonnethead sharks, and visitors will be allowed to gently touch these animals once the exhibit opens on Saturday, March 16.
     “We’re so pleased to offer this exhibit so all our visitors, whether they’re local or visiting from around the world, can learn about these creatures that inhabit our local waters,” said Dr. John Dindo, Associate Director at the Sea Lab. “The Sea Lab has been a steady proponent of hands-on education; we believe that experiential learning leads to life-long learning, and what could be more hands-on than having the ability to stroke a ray or shark?”
     The Sea Lab, in its commitment to alternative energy sources, will operate the touch tank through a geothermal heating and cooling system, keeping the saltwater temperature at a comfortable 70 degrees year-round.  The heat pump loops are buried in a freshwater aquifer 170 feet below ground, where the temperature is a constant 70 degrees.  The freshwater circuit will heat or cool the saltwater circuits, depending on the need.
     “Not only is this more cost-effective than paying to continually heat or cool the tank,” adds Dr. Dindo, “this is in line with all our other efforts to support and promote alternative energy.  We already have solar power and a permeable parking lot; this is a natural next step, and we want our visitors to learn about this as well as the rays and sharks.”
