Protecting Yourself – Avoiding Immigration Scams A new immigration scam has launched in our area. An immigration lawyer in Atlanta has reported that a client of his received a telephone call supposedly from a USCIS officer named “Diana Cooper.” This “officer” told the client that the government had recorded conversations of him requesting a loan, that doing so was a ground to have him removed from the country, and that she was preparing paperwork for his arrest. The “officer” gave the client a telephone number of (954) 824-6294 and said she would call the client back to try to “help” him. The client immediately called his immigration attorney, who then called the number and reached a recording that sounded like the official USCIS number. The attorney got a person on the line in Spanish who claimed to be an immigration officer, but who hung up and refused to answer further calls when he realized he was dealing with an attorney rather than a victim. Later that day, the client received a call from yet another person, presumably also pretending to be an officer, who asked the client to make a payment to resolve the issue. The caller told the client not to tell his attorney, or the government would not be able to help him. Fortunately, the client above did not fall for the scam, and did not lose any money. However, it is important to realize that there are criminals out there who will take advantage of an immigrant’s fear of the government and misunderstanding of the system to try to cheat him out of money. I expect this type of crime to become more prevalent in the next few months, as the nation discusses possible immigration reform and people are unsure how these changes will affect their lives. For this reason, it is always good advice to be on guard, and to consult a qualified immigration attorney if you are not sure whether something you hear is correct. NEVER give money or personal information to anyone for immigration issues unless you are sure that the person is trustworthy, reputable, and qualified. If you have been a victim of an immigration scam, contact a qualified immigration attorney. He or she can help you report the crime and can help determine if the criminal has caused any harm to your immigration case. As long as there are people who live in fear and uncertainty, there will be criminals who will try to take advantage of them. Don’t be a victim. Get the facts you need to protect yourself and your family. |
