International Festival celebrates history and culture in Pensacola April 20-21 Entertainment, music and food will brighten downtown waterfront in free event PENSACOLA, Fla.—The Gulf Coast’s many cultures will be showcased April 20-21 at the Estevanico International Festival celebrating food, dance, music and customs of Africans, Spaniards, Hispanics, Portuguese, Native Americans, Jamaicans and Caribbean islanders. The two days of family-friendly activities will offer insights into the lives of many settlers and their influences on Gulf Coast culture. Admission is free, and kids can stay cool thanks to a water sprinkler that will keep them hopping. These are just some aspects of the Estevanico International Festival to be held April 20-21 at Plaza de Luna, 900 S. Palafox St. in downtown Pensacola. Event hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday April 20 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday April 21. Estevanico was the first person from Africa known to have set foot in the present continental United States. A Moroccan, Estevanico was a member of the Narvaez Expedition in 1528; he acted as a guide on Fray Marcos de Niza’s expedition to find the Seven Cities of Gold in 1539. The event is being produced by the Perdido Key Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Information Center in coordination with the African American Chamber, the DeVilliers Cultural Heritage Museum and other community groups. The purpose is to celebrate diversity and teach people about Estevanico's journey of discovery, through art, food and music. Culturally based community groups are invited to apply to perform on the entertainment stage. Art and food vendors also are being sought. Contact the Chamber at (850)492-4660 or email events@perdidochamber.com for more information. For more details, see www.visitperdido.com |
