PSC Presents “Voices from Mariel” and Filmmaker Jose Garcia April 12 PENSACOLA, FL – Pensacola State College’s Black History/Multicultural Committee and the Cuban American Association present the movie, “Voices From Mariel,” followed by guest speaker Jose Garcia, a survivor of the Mariel Boatlift and the developer of the movie’s story. The free event is open to the public at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, in the Hagler Auditorium, Building 2, Room 252, on the Pensacola campus. There will be a book signing after the movie and lecture. Books and DVD copies of the movie will be available for purchase. Through the memories of 10 Cuban-American families, “Voices From Mariel” tells the compelling story of nearly 125,000 Cuban-born immigrants who came to the United States more than 30 years ago as the survivors of the Mariel Boatlift. Fearing civil unrest in April 1980, Fidel Castro proclaimed that any Cuban who wished to immigrate to the United States could board a boat at the nearby port of Mariel. From April to September that year, nearly 125,000 Cubans crowded into approximately 1,700 boats and sailed to the United States. Many of the vessels were barely sea worthy and overcrowding made them unsafe. As a result, 27 refugees died. For most, the exile meant abandoning personal possessions and separating from family that could last for a lifetime. Yet, for those leaving their native soil, the cost of their mass exodus was outweighed by something previously unimaginable in a dictatorship – an opportunity to pursue their dreams. “Voices From Mariel” explores the legacy of the brave and committed people who risked their lives for a new chance in the United States. “Voices From Mariel” has been selected for the Madrid International Film Festival held in July. It has been nominated for awards in Best Editing of a Feature Documentary and Best Feature Documentary. For more information, call 850-484-1759 or 850-484-1437. |
