Florida Governor Vetoes Dream Act Driver’s License Bill ORLANDO - The governor of Florida went against the Florida legislature on Tuesday by vetoing HB 235 which would have allowed legal Hispanic and other legal immigrants in the United States with no criminal history to obtain a driver’s license. The measure was overwhelming approved in the Republican-dominated legislature with a vote of 115-2 in the Florida House and unanimously in the Senate, incidentally every Democrat in the State supported the bill. “Approving these young, productive people with the ability to drive made good economic sense and was in the best interest of public safety. Many believe that Governor Scott is trying to shore up his conservative credentials in a year where comprehensive immigration reform is being debated by congress,” said Tabitha Frazier, President, Leon County Hispanic Caucus. The children of immigrants who qualify for deferred action will still be able to obtain a temporary drivers licenses under federal and state law if they have employment authorization from the federal government. "The ACLU of Florida sent a letter to the Department of Motor Vehicles today explaining that Tuesday’s veto should have no impact on that policy,'' said Howard Simon, executive director of the ACLU of Florida. |
