HABSGC Otorga Becas
En Mayo la Asociación Hispana de la Costa del Golfo  (Hispanic American Association of the Gulf Coast), seis estudiantes recibieron de $500 a $1,000 en efectivo para perseguir sus estudios universitarios. El programa de las becas de HABSGC (por sus siglas en inglés) ha estado otorgando fondos en los últimos 4 años, por un total de más de $15,000. Este dinero viene de actividades, recaudadores de fondos y donadores.
     Cada año solicitantes de descendencia hispana para la beca son asegurados de escuelas en los Condados de  Baldwin y Mobile en Alabama. Hasta el 2012 solo solicitantes graduándose de la preparatoria quienes fueran aceptados a universidades, colegios comunitarios o escuelas con programas técnicos eran considerados.  Este año , las becas fueron extendidas a estudiantes que ya estuvieran en programas de alta educación.  
     Nosotros siempre estamos buscando por maneras de asegurar más dinero para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes. “Negocios y personas que quieran donar a nuestras becas o que quieran recaudar fondos siempre nos pueden contactar atreves de nuestra página web”, dijo la Dr. Leida Javier-Ferrell, quien es maestra en la Universidad del Sur de Alabama ( University  of South Alabama) y es la Vice Presidenta de HABAGC.
     Ed Seoane, Presidente  de HABAGC dijo, “el programa de las becas es una manera de darle algo en regreso a la sociedad. Estudiantes hispanos pueden recibir nuestra ayuda no solo atreves de nuestras becas pero también asistiendo a nuestras actividades, atreves de redes y asegurando mentores y haciendo conexiones profesionales. Cualquier persona interesada en ser miembro de HABAGC puede aplicar atreves de nuestra página web. Tenemos juntas profesionales trimestrales y algunas actividades sociales y de redes en el área.”
     HABAGC fue fundada hace 4 años  por un grupo de hispanos profesionales que tenían la necesidad de conectarse con otros hispanos profesionales en orden para crear redes y proveer suporte económico a negocios en desarrollo en la región, especialmente con  el Caribe, Centro y Sur América. Miembros de HABAGC han acogido misiones de comercio y visitado a varios grupos de países latinos y España como parte del trabajo de desarrollo económico de la Cámara de Comercios del Área de Mobile ( Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce) y de la Autoridad de Puerto de Mobile (Alabama Port Authority).
     Estudiantes quienes reciben las becas tienen una membresía a la organización de un año sin costo alguno. Información sobre las becas puede ser encontrada en www.habagc.org

HABSGC Awards Scholarships
In the May meeting of the Hispanic American Association of the Gulf Coast, six students received scholarships from $500 to $1,000 in cash to pursue their college studies. The HABSGC’ scholarship program has been awarding funds for the past 4 years, for a total of over $15,000. This money comes from activities, fundraisers and donors.
     Each year Hispanic-descent applicants for the scholarship are secured from schools in Baldwin and Mobile Counties in Alabama. Up to 2012 only applicants graduating from high schools that were admitted to universities, community colleges or post-secondary technical programs were considered. This year, the scholarship was extended to students that were already studying in higher education programs. 
     We are always looking for ways to secure more funding to help our students. “Businesses or individuals that want to donate to our scholarship fund or that want to do a fundraiser can always contact us thorough our website”, said Dr. Leida Javier-Ferrell, who teaches at the University of South Alabama and is the VP of HABAGC.
     Ed Seoane, President of HABAGC said, “the scholarship program is one of the ways we give back to the society. Hispanic students can get our help not only through scholarships but also by attending our activities, networking and securing mentors and connections from the professional membership. Anyone interested in belonging to HABAGC can apply through our website.  We have quarterly professional meetings and some social and networking activities in the area.”
     HABAGC was founded 4 years ago by a group of Hispanic professional that had the need to connect with other Hispanic professionals in order to network and to provide support to the business economic development of the region, especially with the Caribbean, Central and South America. Member of HABAGC have hosted trade mission and visiting groups from several Latin countries and Spain  as part of the economic development work of the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce and the Alabama Port Authority.
