Cámara: ¿Un Camino a la Ciudadanía o un Camino a las Prisiones?
La Ley “SAFE" estilo Arizona aprobada por el Comité Judicial de la Cámara puede sabotear la reforma migratoria

Miami, FL (June 19)—Anoche, el Comité Judicial de la Cámara de Representantes aprobó la Ley “SAFE", más parecida a una versión nacional de la ley SB1070 de Arizona que a algo relacionado con la reforma migratoria. Residentes del sur de la Florida creen que la Ley SAFE es una clara señal de que una minoría extrema de la Cámara de Representantes no está conectada con la realidad del país en contacto y quiere sabotear cualquier posibilidad de una reforma migratoria en Estados Unidos. Por ende, instan al grupo de los 7 que presente su proyecto de ley bipartidista para ofrecer un verdadero camino hacia adelante.
     "Si la Cámara sigue pasando leyes anti-inmigrantes en lugar de una verdadera reforma, la reforma migratoria va a morir", dice Jonathan Fried, Director Ejecutivo de WeCount! "Los votantes y los estadounidenses en general han dicho una y otra vez que quieren una reforma migratoria integral con un camino a la ciudadanía, y que la quieren este año. En cambio, la Cámara sigue jugando a la politiquería y dándonos proyectos de ley que sólo ofrecen un camino a las prisiones para millones de familias inmigrantes.”
     La Ley SAFE haría de la Ley SB 1070 de Arizona una ley nacional y resucitaría la ley de Sensenbrenner de 2005 que provocó algunas de las protestas más grandes en la historia de EE.UU. En lugar de crear un camino a la ciudadanía para millones de nuevos americanos, esta ley quiere infundir temor entre las comunidades de inmigrantes y criminalizar a los inmigrantes indocumentados y a cualquier ciudadano estadounidense que les ofrezca asistencia.
     "Esta ley no es una reforma migratoria, sino otro intento más de agrandar el problema que ya tenemos. Esto debería aumentar el sentido de urgencia para que el Grupo de los 7 presente su proyecto de ley de reforma migratoria bipartidista con un camino a la ciudadanía", dice Sarai Portillo del Centro de Trabajadores de Miami. "De lo contrario, la Cámara estará enviando un mensaje claro de que no le importan la voluntad de la mayoría de los estadounidenses, la reforma migratoria y el voto latino".

 

 House of Representatives: A Path to Citizenship or a Path to Prisons?

Miami, FL (June 19)—Last night, the House Judiciary Committee surprisingly passed the “SAFE Act”, a piece-meal legislation that looks more like an outdated nationwide version of Arizona's SB-1070 than anything related to immigration reform. South Floridians believe that the SAFE Act is a clear sign that an extreme minority of the House of Representatives is out of touch and attempting to sabotage any chance of immigration reform in America. They urge the Gang of 7 to introduce their bipartisan bill that offers a real path forward.
     “If the House keeps passing 'HATE' Acts instead of real reform, immigration reform will be dead,” says Jonathan Fried, Executive Director for We Count! “Voters and America have said over and over again that they want comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship, and that they want it this year. Instead, the House keeps giving us political games and hateful anti-immigrant bills that only provide a path to prison for millions of immigrant families.”
     The SAFE Act would make Arizona's SB 1070 a nationwide law and bring back Sensenbrenner's bill from 2005 that sparked some of the largest protests in U.S. history. Instead of providing a path to citizenship for millions of New Americans, it would instill fear among immigrant communities and provide a path to prison for aspiring Americans and any U.S. citizen who provides any assistance to them.
     “This is not immigration reform; it is another attempt to exacerbate the problem we already have. This should increase the sense of urgency for the Gang of 7 to file its bipartisan comprehensive immigration bill with a path to citizenship,” says Sarai Portillo from the Miami Workers Center. “Otherwise, the House will be sending a clear message that they don’t care about the will of the majority of Americans, immigration reform and the Latino vote.”
