Mobile County Grant Funds Veterans Transitional Housing Mobile County commissioners approved a $1.4 million federal grant on June 24 to complete the funding of a 39-unit transitional housing project for veterans located at 6501 Moffett Road. The project, called Eagle’s Landing, is being developed by Volunteers of America Southeast, which is bringing another $1.7 million in federal grants to the project. Ten newly-constructed residential buildings are planned that will house 38 efficiency apartments and a single two-bedroom unit. The county’s contribution comes from a HOME loan through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Volunteers of America received another $1.33 million from a HUD grant for economic development and a $395,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In addition to the residential units, the housing complex also includes a community building with office space, laundry facilities, a computer lab and a meeting room. Eagle’s Landing will provide a range of voluntary support services intended to ease the movement of tenants into permanent housing within 24 months. A ribbon cutting will be held at 3 p.m. on July 26 at Eagle’s Landing. Volunteers of America is accepting referrals now for Eagles Landing. Interested persons should call (251)219-3900 or (251)421-1229. |
