DJs de Gulf Coast Demostrar Unidad Latina por la Música |
Gulf Coast DJs Demonstrate Latino Unity Through Music On September 13, DJ Lecz of Fort Walton Beach released the Los Duros Del Sonido Mixtape, a 75-minute mix of music by six different DJs from the Florida-Alabama Gulf Coast region. The music compilation includes each of the DJ’s music specialties including Salsa, Bachata, Reggaetn, Tribal, and Merengue. The mixtape is the brainchild of DJ Lecz who says he did it to demonstrate unity among area DJs and the community. “I put this mixtape together not only for the variety in the DJs’ music, but to demonstrate unity among Latinos,” says Lecz. “People think that we (DJs) backstab each other, but it’s not true,” he added. Lecz, who plays regularly at NightTown in Destin, Fudpuckers in Okaloosa Island, and Bedlam in Pensacola, says that at the time that he created the mixtape it seemed that every DJ thought they were the best. He added that they have all felt that they were in competition with each other at some point, but it got to where local club patrons couldn’t decide which clubs to go to because they didn’t want to appear disloyal to certain DJs. “We’re very competitive,” Lecz said. “There are a few people that would like to see the DJs against each other, but there should be no one against us. We should all be together. So this project was to show that we do work together.” Lecz adds that he respects all of the DJs in the area because some of them gave him his first opportunities when he was started. He says that now that he has his own fan-base, he I didn’t want people to think that he was the only and best DJ in town. He says that he selected the DJs that participated in the mixtape based on his research for the most active DJs that play at the most popular local night clubs. The mixtape includes music mixes by DJ Ill Will (Salsa), DJ Maximus Moretta (Dembow, a domincan version of Reggaeton), DJ Lecz (Bachata), El Compa Mario (Tribal), DJ Blaze (Regaeton), and DJ Taino (Merengue). The group includes Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Mexican nationalities. Mario Jimenez, aka DJ El Compa Mario, contributed to the mixtape with a mix of Tribal music. Jimenez said that the addition of Tribal was Lecz’s idea that stemmed from Mario’s guest DJ appearance at NightTown on Cinco de Mayo. “He wanted to put something together that might appease the majority of the crowd with different tastes and styles of music. He was focused on the Latino community, so he wasn’t going to leave out the Mexican community and felt that Tribal fit in perfectly with the other club music,” Jimenez said. “Lecz chose Tribal after learning that it was being introduced in non-Mexican Latino clubs in New York,” he added. Jimenez, who says that he has known Lecz for about two years, added “There seems to be a competition amongst DJs out here, but the fact is that there are plenty of good DJs but everyone has their own styles. No one can claim to be the best because then they’d have to claim to know every style of music, and that just doesn’t happen.” “I’m glad to be a part of it and thank Lecz and Wil for including me.” Jimenez concludes. “I hope everyone likes it.” 120 copies of Los Duros Del Sonido Mixtape were burned on CD and were distributed at a release party at Fudpuckers on Sept 13. Some copies were also distributed at the Latin Jam in Pensacola on October 12. There has been over 300 listens online. “I want to thank all the DJs not only for participating, but for letting me have creative control,” concludes Lecz who is also a graphic artist and created the artwork on the cover. A second mix tape with more DJs may be produced next year. The mixtape can be heard at https://soundcloud.com/dj-illwil/los-duros-del-sonido-mixtape. |
