Edicion Final: Muchas Gracias y Adios
Es muy difícil decirlo pero ésta es la última edición de La Costa Latina y el Hispanic Resourse Center(HCR) cerrará a fines de Enero. A pesar del éxito de los festivales en cuanto a asistencia, ofreciendo algo único a la Costa del Golfo y lo más importante UNIENDO a la comunidad Latina, yo temo que las finanzas no son lo suficientemente fuertes para continuar otro año. Yo he podido ser capaz de hacer caminar las cosas haciendo casi todo por mi misma, incluyendo distribuir el periódico, pero se necesitaria un equipo mucho más grande para mantenerlo. No hay sufuciente espacio en este periódico para decir todo lo que quisiera decir.
Mi ultimo mensaje es MUCHAS GRACIAS. Mi corazón reboza de alegria con el amor que he recibido de esta comunidad. Por favor quiero que sepan que les he dado todo lo que podía darles.
Para los que no están familiarizados con la historia de La Costa Latina, todo empezó con el Huracán Iván en 2004. La tormenta causó más daño a las comunidades costeñas que lo que se esperaba. Poco después, las demográficas cambiaron con miles de latinos llegando al área para ayudar a la reconstrucción. Por mi trabajo como directora de Relaciones Públicas para La Cruz Roja Americana y la Independence for the Blind of West Florida, conocía a mucha gente de diferentes agencias que estaban tratando de proveer servicios a personas de habla Hispana que ahora viven en el área. Empezaron a llamarme para ayuda con traducciones, y empecé a reclutar intérpretes voluntarios. En 2 semanas, teníamos cerca de 100 voluntarios quienes hablaban 25 idiomas diferentes. La mayoria hablaba Español. Lo llamé The Language Bank of Northwest Florida.
La necesidad por información en Español creció rápidamente y Latino Media entró en acción. He estado distribuyendo noticias e información en la Costa del Golfo en dos idiomas desde Mayo del 2005. Ese mismo mes fué cuando organicé el primer festival Latino. Lo llamé Expo Latino. Fué un evento que trajo negocios y organizaciones cara a cara con la comunidad de habla Hispana. Voluntarios del Language Bank me ayudaron. Pocos años después el evento se convirtió más en una celebración de la cultura, asi que lo cabié el nombre a Latino Festival. Ha sido una bendición ver personas de cada pais de habla Hispana representar sus paises con orgullo y unidad.
Abrí el HRC en Pensacola en Mayo 2010. Ha sido un lugar donde la gente viene a obtener información acerca de donde encontrar ayuda para cosas desde atención médica a empleo.
Mi corazón se ensanchó cada vez que alguien llamó o llegó diciendo "Me dijeron que Ud. ayuda a la gente aqui."Asi que quisiera pedirles a todos mantener ese espíritu de unidad y compasión vivan ayudándose unos con otros. A pesar que a menudo somos curiosos de saber de donde alguien proviene, espero que esta comunidad continuara celebrando multi- culturalismo y no prejuzgarse el uno al otro.
Me gustaria darles las gracias a todos los que han apoyado el periódico, los festivales y otros esfuerzos que hemos emprendido juntos sobre los años. Yo me llevaré tantos recuerdos, especialmente de aquellos que lloraron lágrimas de orgullo en el Festival del Cinco de Mayo el año pasado. Son demasiados los que tengo que nombrar pero tengo que mencionar a la Universidad de West Florida, Baptist Health Care, NWFL Boricuas Ausentes, Hispanic Action Society, the City of Pensacola, los numerosos anunciantes especialmente Sandy Sansing (Mario Bultron) quien ha anunciado conmigo desde el principio y a cada uno de Uds. que lee La Costa Latina. Me considero muy bendecida de tener tantos amigos. Les doy las gracias a todos por ser parte de mi vida. Por favor, sean buenos el uno con el otro.

Final Edition: Thank You and Good Bye
 As hard as it is to say, this is the last edition of La Costa Latina and the Hispanic Resource Center (HRC) will be closed at the end of January. As successful as the festivals have been in terms of attendance, providing something unique to the Gulf Coast, and more importantly UNITING the Latino community, I’m afraid that finances aren’t strong enough to continue for another year. I’ve been able to keep things going by doing almost everything myself including distributing the newspaper, but it would take a much larger team to sustain it. There is not space in this newspaper to say all that I want to say. Ultimately, my message is THANK YOU. My heart is full with the love that I’ve received from this community. Please know that I have given you all that I could.
For those who are not familiar with the history of La Costa Latina, it starts with Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The storm caused more damage to the coastal communities than we ever expected. Shortly thereafter, the demographics changed with thousands of Latinos moving in to the area to help rebuild. Because of my work as the Public Relations director for the American Red Cross and Independence for the Blind of West Florida, I knew many people from different agencies who were attempting to provide services to Spanish-speakers that now lived in the area. They began calling me to help with translations, so I began recruiting volunteer interpreters. Within two weeks, we had about 100 volunteers who spoke 25 different languages. Most spoke Spanish. I called it The Language Bank of Northwest Florida.
The need for information in Spanish grew rapidly and Latino Media went into action. I’ve been distributing news and information in the Gulf Coast in two languages since May of 2005. That same month is when I organized the first Latino festival. At that time it was called Expo Latino. It was an event that brought businesses and organizations face-to-face with the Spanish speaking community. Volunteers from the Language Bank helped. A few years later, the event became more of a celebration of culture, so I changed the name of the event to the Latino Festival. It has been such a blessing to see people of every Spanish-speaking country represent their nations with pride and unity.
I opened the HRC in Pensacola in May of 2010. It has been a place for people to come get information about where to find help for things ranging from medical attention to employment. It warmed my heart every time someone called or came in saying, “They tell me that you help people here.” On that note, I would like to ask everyone to keep that spirit of unity and compassion alive by helping one another. Although we are often curious to know where someone is from, I hope that this community will continue to celebrate multiculturalism and not prejudge each other.
I would like to thank everyone who has supported the newspaper, the festivals, and other efforts that we’ve endeavored together over the years. I will take with me so many memories, especially of those who shed tears of pride at the Cinco de Mayo Festival last year. There are way too many to name but I have to mention the University of West Florida, Baptist Health Care, NWFL Boricuas Ausentes, Hispanic Action Society, the City of Pensacola, numerous advertisers especially Sandy Sansing (Mario Bultron) who has been advertising with me since the beginning, and every single one of you who read La Costa Latina. I am extremely blessed to have so many friends. I thank you all for being part of my life. Please be kind to one another.
