Brazilian MMA Fighter Announces His Last Fight PENSACOLA, Fla.—Ricardo “Rico” Holanda has announced that he will no longer be fighting professionally. The Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter announced on his social media page on Wednesday, April 15 that he will no longer fight as a competitor due to medical issues. Thank God [He] gave me the chance to experience such a unique feeling. Thanks to all of my friends and sponsors for all the support,” Holanda said in his post. The Brazilian jujitsu fighter also thanked his family, coaches, and training partners for what he described as his short but very blessed MMA career. Holanda’s last fight was on September 5, 2014 at the Pensacola Civic Center. “Fighting takes so much preparation and time from family,” Holanda said in an interview, “but I’ll still be part of the team. My contribution will be more like a coach.” Holanda says that he experienced a mini-stroke last December which prompted him to quit fighting. He says that the while stoke was not due to an injury, doctors have not been able to pinpoint what caused it. Since 2011, Holanda has been teaching once a week at the Academy of Brzilian Jujitsu and MMA on Nine Mile Rd. near Pine Forrest Rd. in Pensacola. Many of his students have been sailors and police officers. He says most of them train for the exercise. “I have come across a lot of people who have told me that they want to do MMA,” Holanda said. “My advice to them is to push through your dream, but know that there is someone up above that has already planned things for you. If it’s meant to be yours, it will be.” Originally from, Fortaleza, Brazil, 35-year-old Holanda has been in the U.S. and Pensacola for nearly 15 years, and is happy about his plans to spend more time with his wife and son. |
