Dollar General Literacy Foundation Awards $58,000 in Literacy Grants to Gulf Coast-Area Schools, Nonprofits and Literacy Organizations: Grants provide funding for adult, family and/or summer literacy programs Last week, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded $58,000 to Gulf Coast-area schools, nonprofits and literacy organizations to support adult, family and summer literacy programs. These grant awards are part of more than $5.8 million in grants awarded today to approximately 720 schools, nonprofits and organizations across the 43 states the company serves. Award recipients include: North Baldwin Literacy Council, Bay Minette: $9,000 Visions of Hope, Inc., Biloxi: $8,000.00 Jefferson Davis Community College, Brewton: $13,000 Foley Public Library, Foley: $3,000 South Baldwin Literacy Council, Foley: $15,000 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Long Beach: $10,000 “It is exciting to see the impact grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation make throughout the country, especially as we cross the $100 million threshold in overall donations and the difference it has to nearly six million people,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “The Dollar General Literacy Foundation truly embodies the company’s mission of Serving Others throughout the communities we serve.” Today’s grant announcements bring the total impact of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s to over $100 million in grants to assist nearly six million people improve their lives through literacy and education since the foundation’s inception in 1993. Recipients of the grant announcements will use Dollar General Literacy Foundation funds to support programs aimed at enhancing summer, family and adult literacy programs. Grants will be used to help promote childhood summer reading or help adults learn to read, prepare for the high school equivalency exam or learn English. The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is also currently accepting applications for youth literacy grants through Thursday, May 21, 2015. Youth literacy grants provide funding to schools, public libraries and nonprofit organizations to help students below grade level or who experience difficulty reading by providing funding to implement new or expanding literacy programs, purchase new technology or equipment or purchase books, materials or software to enhance literacy programs.
