Estudiantes Latinos de la Costa del Golfo Recibieron Becas Para Alcanzar Metas Académicas y Profesionales
Mobile, AL—La Asociación de Negocios Hispano-Americanos de la Costa del Golfo (HABAGC por sus siglas en inglés) organizó la ceremonia anual de premios de becas el martes 5 de mayo en la Universidad del Sur de Alabama (EE.UU.). El Dr. Bob Wood, decano de la Facultad de Negocios de la Universidad Mitchell asistió como orador del evento.
     Cuatro estudiantes universitarios y dos estudiantes de secundaria recibieron becas de $750 a $1.000. La asociación ha otorgado más de $18.000 en los últimos cinco años. A cada solicitante se le requiere escribir un ensayo sobre cómo sus raíces hispanas contribuyeron a sus metas educativas. Los escogidos de este año son los siguientes:
Elizabeth Hernández recibió la aceptación temprana de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad del Sur de Alabama donde actualmente es estudiante de primer año estudiando para ser oncóloga pediátrica. Entre otros proyectos de voluntaria que lleva a cabo, espera con interés seguir el ejemplo de los oncólogos este verano en el Hospital de Niños de Birmingham. Elizabeth está orgullosa de ser de descendencia mexicana y espera algún día tener el privilegio de enseñar a sus hijos acerca de las ricas creencias y costumbres hispanas que ha llegado a amar.
Gabriela Vargas Iturbe está orgullosa de ser de Colombia y de tener de modelo a unos padres maravillosos a seguir que le enseñaron la importancia de la educación. Siguiendo los pasos de su madre, ella se especializa en mercadeo y negocios internacionales y se graduará en el 2017 en la Universidad del Sur de Alabama. Usando sus habilidades bilingües como tutora y mentora y sirviendo como senadora de negocios en la Asociación de Gobierno Estudiantil le ha dado la oportunidad de ver como es la verdadera vida de la universidad. Su meta más significativa es algún día ser capaz de retribuir a todos los que la han ayudado personalmente.
Juan José Pardo Granados, también de Colombia, está inscrito actualmente en el Programa de Honores de la Universidad del Sur de Alabama. Su objetivo es convertirse en médico,  él es miembro de AED (Desfibrilador Externo Automatizado por sus siglas en ingles) de EE.UU de la Sociedad de Pre-Salud y Ciencias Biomédicas, donde ha disfrutado de varios proyectos de servicio y ha buscado activamente la experiencia de investigación. Incluso en su primer año en el programa de pre-medicina, ha llamado la atención de sus profesores quienes tienen plena confianza que va a convertirse en un médico excepcional con un futuro brillante.
Kassy Ashley Ureña Rodríguez tiene una doble licenciatura en Estudios Internacionales con especialización en Relaciones Internacionales y Lenguas Extranjeras donde su concentración es el francés y el ruso con especialización en Lingüística. Su sueño es convertirse en un diplomático de los Estados Unidos de América y es este sueño que la mantiene firme en sus estudios exigentes. Kassy es de la República Dominicana y disfruta con el trabajo voluntario en el Departamento de Policía de Mobile donde se desempeña como intérprete y también da clases de español.
Marissa Cazala está en su último año en Daphne High School y planea asistir a la Universidad de Loyola en la que seguirá una licenciatura en Música Comercial y Popular. Su pasión por la música comenzó cuando Marissa era muy joven es asi como ella aprendió sola los acordes simples en un teclado a la edad de dos años. Habiendo recibido clases de música formales desde la edad de tres años, ella está más decidida que nunca a aprender a tocar más instrumentos de lo que ya lo hace, aprender más la teoría de la músical, y continuar con su objetivo de convertirse en un músico, directora músical o incluso en una representante de música.
Stephanie Cartagena es en su último año en el programa de Bachillerato Internacional en el Davidson High School, donde es el Capitán de la Guardia de Invierno también se desempeña como presidenta de la Asociación de Gobierno Estudiantil. Su familia se mudó a los Estados Unidos desde Honduras cuando tenía sólo siete años de edad en busca de una vida más estable  y libre del caos político, y el apoyo y ejemplo de su familia ha inspirado a Stephanie para empujar sus límites personales en la educación. Ella ha sido aceptada en el Colegio de Honores de la Universidad de Alabama, donde buscará el título de Ingeniería.
     Los patrocinadores del evento y el fondo de becas incluyen: a Springhill Medical Center, Alabama Port Authority, International Shipholding Corporation, Page and Jones, University of South Alabama, Hargrove Engineers & Constructors. Collaborators include: Renaissance Riverview Plaza Hotel, Cardiology Associates, AHI Corporate Housing Mobile; Alabama Orthopeadic Center, Alabama Power Company, Airbus DS military Aircraft, Inc. The Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce es también un socio.

 

 Gulf Coast Latino Students Awarded Scholarships to Reach Academic and Professional Goals
HABAGC Scholarship AwardeesMobile, AL—The Hispanic American Business Association of the Gulf Coast (HABAGC) hosted their annual scholarship awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 5 at the University of South Alabama (USA). Dr. Bob Wood, Dean of the university’s Mitchell College of Business attended as the event speaker.
     Four college students and two high school students were awarded scholarships ranging from $750 to $1,000. The association has awarded more than $18,000 in the last five years. Each applicant is required to write an essay about how their Hispanic roots contributed to their educational goals. This year’s recipients are as follows:
     Elizabeth Hernández received early acceptance to the College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama where she is currently a freshman studying to become a pediatric oncologist. Among other volunteer projects she already performs, she is looking forward to shadowing oncologists this summer at the Children's Hospital in Birmingham. Elizabeth is proud to be of Mexican descent and hopes someday to have the privilege to teach her own children about the rich Hispanic beliefs and customs she has come to love.
     Gabriela Vargas Iturbe is proud to be from Colombia and to have wonderful role model parents who taught her the importance of education. Following in her mother's footsteps, she is majoring in marketing and international business and will graduate in 2017 from the University of South Alabama. Using her bilingual skills as a tutor and mentor and serving as Business Senator on the Student Government Association has given her the opportunity to see what true college life is like. Her most meaningful goal is to one day be able to give back to all who have personally helped her.
     Juan José Pardo Granados, also from Colombia, is currently enrolled in the University of South Alabama´s Honors Program. His goal is to become a medical doctor and he is a member of USA´s AED Pre-Health Society and the Biomedical Sciences Society where has enjoyed various service projects and has actively pursued research experience. Even as a freshman in the pre-med program, he has caught the attention of his professors who have full confidence that he will become an outstanding doctor with a bright future.
     Kassy Ashley Ureña Rodríguez has a double major in International Studies with a concentration in International Relations and Foreign Languages where her concentration is French and Russian with a minor in Linguistics. Her dream is to become a diplomat of the United States of America and it is this dream that keeps her driven in her demanding studies. Kassy is from the island nation of the Dominican Republic and enjoys volunteer work at the Mobile Police Department where she serves as an interpreter and also gives Spanish classes.
     Marissa Cazala is a senior at Daphne High School and plans to attend Loyola University where she will pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Popular and Commercial Music. Her passion for music began when Marissa was very young as she taught herself simple chords on a keyboard at the age of two.  Having received formal music lessons since the age of three, she is more determined than ever to learn how to play more instruments than she already does, learn more music theory, and continue with her goal to become a musician, musician´s manager or even a music manager.
     Stephanie Cartagena is a senior in the International Baccalaureate program at Davidson High School where she is the Winter Guard Captain also serves as president of the Student Government Association. Her family moved to the United States from Honduras when she was just seven years old in search of a more stable life free of political turmoil, and the support and example set by her family has inspired Stephanie to push her personal boundaries in education. She has been accepted into the Honors College of the University of Alabama where she will pursue a degree in Engineering.
