Carta de la Editora: Centro de Recursos Hispanos Gana Estatus de Non-Profit
|
Letter from the Editor: Hispanic Resource Center Gains Non-Profit Status I am pleased to announce that the Hispanic Resource Center is now an official 501(c)3 non-profit organization. This is great news because this status means that we can now apply for grants and funding from various sources to continue our cultural events such as the Latino Festival and Cinco de Mayo Festival that we couldn’t apply for before. Even better, we will be able to apply for funding for other projects such as English classes, citizenship classes, workshops, and business counseling…the sky is the limit. My dream for the Hispanic Resource Center has always been to create a community center where we can meet the needs of the Latino community such as educational programs, recreational projects, consulate visits, family and immigration services, and more. We’ve always been a bridge to local social service agencies, but have been limited by staffing or space. Everything that we did was supported by the newspaper, which is a tough business operate. Newspapers are funded by advertisers, and advertisers need to see new customers as a result of those advertisements. If not, they will discontinue their advertising. We no longer have to rely solely on the revenue that those advertising dollars bring in. If you could close your eyes and dream with me, I’d like to have a facility with classrooms, computer lab, and perhaps one day an auditorium for events. I’m already being contacted by community organizations and individuals who want to help. You can help too! There is so much to do and this non-profit status means that we can accept donations and accumulate volunteer hours that will demonstrate the needs for our community. Plans include increasing our ability to provide stronger connections with our local government, businesses, social service agencies, and more so that we can be a more effective bridge between these organizations and our Spanish-speaking community. I am grateful for the support that I have received from community leaders and volunteers over the years. Those who have been involved know that we have accomplished a lot, but we needed funding to make things better. Things are about to change for the Latino community in Pensacola in a big way! As always, thank you for your support! Grace Resendez McCaffery President of Latino Media Gulf Coast & The Hispanic Resource Center |
