McClaren Fichado Como Entrenador del Newcastle
|
McClaren tabbed as Newcastle boss Newcastle, England—Newcastle announced on Wednesday that former England national team manager Steve McClaren will take charge of the club on a three-year contract. After parting ways with John Carver and Steve Stoneon on Tuesday, Newcastle finally was able to secure the services of the 54-year-old McClaren, who was targeted by the club when Alan Pardew left in January. At the time, McClaren opted to remain at Derby County in an attempt to help the team gain promotion to the Premier League. However, after Derby came up short for a second straight season, McClaren decided to move to St James' Park. He takes over a team that struggled badly over the final few months of the season and was nearly relegated until a win on the final day of the season confirmed that the Magpies would remain in the top flight. Newcastle has failed to win a trophy since 1969, and McClaren will be charged with not only aiming to end that drought, but also with helping the team improve in the Premier League. "There's a lot of work to do but the club has made it clear about wanting success, and I would not have come here if I didn't believe they were serious," McClaren said. "This club has waited far too long to win a trophy. That's one of my primary objectives here. "I've already won trophies as a manager and a club the size of Newcastle United should be winning cups and finishing in the top eight in the Premier League." |
