A Better Way to Give seeks to address homelessness in the region PENSACOLA, FLA.—Dozens of colorfully-decorated, artistically-adorned meters will soon be installed in downtown Pensacola in an effort to improve the lives of the city’s homeless. The initiative, named A Better Way to Give, is the Greater Pensacola Chamber Foundation’s Leadership Pensacola (LeaP) class project of 2016. Inspired by similar programs around the country, A Better Way to Give recycles obsolete parking meters, providing an alternative to giving to panhandlers. This project creates a single funding source to amplify the resources available to existing programs and agencies with a proven track record of success. Funds can be committed to the project in a multitude of ways, including spare change deposits in meters downtown, through sponsorship of a meter or an online giving portal at BetterWayPensacola.org. The Downtown Improvement Board has pledged to collect funds from the meters and pass along to the United Way of Escambia County so the project can continue after the class has graduated. The LeaP class plans to work with local churches, nonprofit organizations and government entities to create a network of help for the homeless and education for the community. Approximately 25 meters will be installed in early 2016 and up to 50 more by May. In addition to the meters, the class intends to launch an education campaign about the true causes of homelessness via media partners, social media and meter-painting parties.
