Comunidades Inmigrantes Latinoamericanas Celebran la Decisión de Prensa Asociada de Eliminar el Odioso Termino “Inmigrante Ilegal” de su Manual de Estilo
Chicago, IL – La agencia Prensa Asociada (AP) anuncio el día 2 de abril que dejara de usar los términos “Ilegal” e “Inmigrante Ilegal” para describir a personas extranjeras residiendo en un determinado país sin autorización migratoria. A la luz de este anuncio, Oscar Chacón, director ejecutivo de NALACC, tuvo la siguiente reacción:
     Las organizaciones miembros de la Alianza Nacional de Comunidades Caribeñas y Latino Americanas (NALACC), celebramos la acertada decisión de Prensa Asociada de dejar de usar los términos “Ilegal” e “Inmigrante Ilegal” para referirse a seres humanos. En los Estados Unidos de América, estos términos han sido utilizados por organizaciones racistas y xenofóbicas con el fin de avanzar en sus esfuerzos de promoción de una imagen de las personas extranjeras como una amenaza económica, social, política y cultural a la nación.
     Desde nuestros inicios en el año 2004, y más sistemáticamente a partir del lanzamiento de nuestra iniciativa SOMOS/WE ARE en el año 2009, NALACC ha insistido en señalar que la palabra “Ilegal” nunca debió usarse para referirse a seres humanos. Únicamente las acciones y los objetos pueden ser llamados ilegales. En adición a ser un uso lingüísticamente incorrecto, el uso de este epíteto para referirse a seres humanos es también inmoral, puesto que deshumaniza a las personas migrantes.
     Nuestros esfuerzos se orientaran ahora a presionar a otros medios de prensa, como también a nuestros oficiales electos y designados, para que sigan el ejemplo de Prensa Asociada y dejen de usar estos odiosos términos. El dejar de usar de una vez por todas estos términos derogatorios para referirse a personas migrantes significaría un muy buen primer paso en camino a despejar el toxico ambiente que ha dificultado reformas humanistas y racionales de la política de inmigración y el trato a personas migrantes.

 

 

 Latin American Immigrant Communities Celebrate Decision by Associated Press to Eliminate the Hateful Term “Illegal Immigrant” from its Stylebook

Chicago, IL – The Associated Press (AP) announced on April 2 that it will no longer sanction the use of the terms “Illegal” or “Illegal Immigrant” to describe foreign nationals residing in a given country without immigration authorization. In light of this announcement, Oscar Chacón, NALACC’s executive director, had the following reaction:
     Members of the National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities (NALACC), celebrate the decision by the Associated Press to stop using the terms “Illegal” and “Illegal Immigrant” to refer to human beings.  In the United States, these terms have been used by racist and xenophobic organizations to advance their larger goal of promoting an image of immigrants as an economic, social, political and cultural threat to the nation.
     Since our inception in 2004, and more systematically since our SOMOS/WE ARE initiative launched in 2009, NALACC has insisted that the term “illegal” should never be applied to human beings. Only actions and objects can be called illegal. In addition to being linguistically incorrect, the use of this epithet to refer to human beings is also immoral, as it dehumanizes immigrants.
     Our efforts will turn now to pressing other media outlets and our elected and appointed officials to follow the AP’s good example.  Moving away from the use of derogatory terms for immigrants is a good first step toward disbursing the toxic cloud that has precluded a humane and rational reform of immigration policies, as well as common sense-driven policies when it comes to how we treat immigrant populations.
